Insurance - misleading pseudo-scams they use

I remember Loon saying on quite a number of different threads that the maximum years that insurers treat as actual NCB is 5 (I think), with anything over being counted as claim free years.
Some companies accept up to 15 years of NCD, I think it was Axa, Admiral up to 9 years, Aviva up to 5 years. So if you go to one of the companies with lower NCD max, you will "lose" your extra years. You will have to fight with them at the end, to get cofirmation of real NCD, not capped by their 5 years. Bump - been searching but cannot find much info..
Been told I need a "Thatcham Approved Tracker" for a vehicle.
Randomly searching, traffic master version seems ok, who knows?
£400 fitted + £200 per year subscription!
Seems like a monopoly on all this as the insurers wont recognise some systems much cheaper but probably do an identical job, any thoughts much appreciated?
Thanks.

Maybe they do, but unless the maker is prepared to put it thru Thatcham testing to get Thatcham approval, how does the insurer know if it does the same job? They aren't electronics experts. TwigtheWonderkid said:

People seem to have a different interpretation to the words "rip off" and "scam" to me.
If I go to buy something, and they quote me £1000, and I can get it for £500 elsewhere, that is not a rip off or a scam. It's just one supplier's price that another supplier can better. No one is holding a gun to my head, or forcing me into anything.
If they quoted £1000, and then took £1500 from my card, and refused to refund it, that would be a rip off!
I'd disagree. If the exact same thing is 200% dearer then where you can get it elsewhere than to me, that would definitely be a rip off.If I go to buy something, and they quote me £1000, and I can get it for £500 elsewhere, that is not a rip off or a scam. One insurer might be after certain business, and may be competitive for that and uncompetitive for a different type of customer. It's just business. I don't know why people get so upset that they got their insurance for £500 when someone else quoted them £2K. So what, you never paid the £2K so you weren't ripped off.
The sailors were the cheapest for my Fiat Punto a few years ago and offered me a "discounted" multicar policy if I added the Alfa. I told them they'd need to make it a big discount, their premium for the Alfa was £1200, my current renewal was £260...
I guess if I owned two Fiat Puntos they'd be ok but I really don't see how multicar could work for anyone in real life.

IIRC Direct Line wanted one when I first had a Monaro, no-one else did. I didn't use Direct Line!
