I saw a rusty meastro just yesterday.
Imagine if all the cars ever produced were still on the roads.
Lots of the old cars are in barns waiting to be found and sold on ebay. They will turn up one day. It was only a few years ago you never saw a mk3 Cortina at the shows now you always see a few.

Also have a 1991 2 Door 1.1, 100% original and sold from the Ford dealer 6miles away.

Arrr yes, the Onion.

Really cant remember the last one I saw (although I did see a very tidy Mk4 escort convertible out for spin today). There was a brief period when a few of the Max-P crowd dropped turbo blocks and leather trim into Onions making them marginally more attractive.

My father owned 2 of the bloody things, a 1.6 Ghia and a 1.6i Ghia. Went on many many holidays in those things so I have a soft spot for them but I don't miss them.

I remember reading all the magazine reports about the Renault 19 16V and how good it was. Did I make it up in my head or did they do a fast (for the day) diesel version?

70s and 80s Renaults (well, all French cars, really)

I'd love a Renault 16!
These are as rare as hens teeth and go for epic money when they do come up for sale; you're looking at the think end of £10k for a good 16TX

In our village of <800 people there are still two Cavalier Mk3s - a white pre-facelift 2.0 and a burgundy post-facelift 1.7TD. Both look in decent nick as well. There's a third one, a blue post-facelift, parked outside a house on my daily commute to work, though I haven't seen it move in months.

On the flipside what cars of circa 20 years old do you still a lot of?

For me it's Volvo 850s and Peugeot 306s

Yup, see plenty of these still on the roads, but the Phase 1s are definitely becoming scarce.

The fast Renault 19 was the '16v' with the same engine as the clio 16v - the lesser clio to the Williams.

The fast french derv of the time was the Citroen ZX Volcane

How often do you see mk3 fiestas nowadays? A once abundant car rarely seen on contemporary roads.
Even the newest Mk3 Fiestas are over 20 years old. Rust will have killed most of them, although a few low mileage cars will still survive in OAP garages up and down the country. I seem to recall reading recently the average age of cars going to scrapyards in the UK was 13 years.

I'm a Fiesta fan and have had two Mk4s and a Puma. But being objective, who would want to bother preserving a bog standard Mk3 that isn't an XR2 or RS Turbo? They were cheap disposable consumer products, not expected to last forever.

The Mk1 Scirocco is pretty scarce, even the mk2 isn't that common.

The 80s/90s era Carlton and Senator are uncommon now.

I had a mk3 fiesta, it wasn't the rust that killed it it was the piston rings. It used to drink more oil than petrol. My uncle thought he gave me a good car so I felt guilty only getting 4-5 months out of it.

Growing up in the 1990's, the most common cars around here were Vauxhall Cavaliers and Ford Escorts. Cannot really remember the last time I saw either in any meaningful numbers. I'd wager that most in the UK have simply rusted away.
