Yesterday I decided to see how much I could get in there.
After the initial few clicks from the pump, I very lightly pressed down on the trigger and over the course of a couple minutes, trickled in another 4 Quid's worth of petrol.
I've read online most cars have an overflow tube which leaks petrol onto the floor but that didn't happen. Is there any harm in doing this? Was out of morbid curiosity more then anything

I am betting that it wasn't full full, if it was, it would have overflowed somewhere.

I over filled my Corrado many moons ago and it sloshed out of the over-flow tube when taking left hand bends. It really stank inside the car too. I thought I had a leaking fuel tank the first time it happened!

So no real harm in it? No smells of petrol on the drive home, just a heavy, sloshy car. Beats paying motorway prices though

I have a phantom fuel stealer in my car. It's meant to have a 45 litre tank, so 10 gal give or take. When it's empty (as in showing 15 miles range and fuel gauge on empty) it's showing as 8 gallons used, so where did the rest go?

It has implications for my mpg too. 240 miles out of 8 gallons is a respectable 30mpg. 240 miles out of 10 gallons means i'm doing 24....

I always overfill too, so no idea at all where it's going! eek

Inaccurate distance to empty + worse mpg than you think

No it doesn't harm in the slightest, if it did there would be burning wrecks everywhere.
I brim mine until I can see it and always have done.

Some cars will go into limp mode if the carbon filter for vapour emissions is full of fuel. Some will reset after a number of starts, others will need a OBDC reader. Some Fords and Morgans can be a bit of a pain.

Overfilling can have some unfortunate consequences, from fuel being dribbled onto the tyres to pools of diesel on the road and car fires.

Surely you are saving about 50p by adding another £4 of petrol?

How much fuel do you fill it with, and how many miles between fills? That's the only real arbiter.

That's valid for diesel, but this guy is talking about petrol. Any petrol that drips on to the road will evaporate almost straight away.

I'll be checking that when I get the car back but even when the car is showing as empty, the most i've ever got in was around 38 litres.

They must have made it so when you're showing 0 miles you still have 1-1.5 gal in the tank. It is a Corsa after all, it needs to be moron proof.
