TVR rebuild complete, and whilst i have never intended it to be a track car, it seems the best way to bed in my new brakes and suspension.

I took it to Castle Coombe and it tested 112db at 5k rpm.

Is there a track in the UK that i can go on without being chased off the grounds by the local nimby's ?

IIRC all tracks in the UK are 98-104Db. Pretty much a case of wad it out, fit a silencer (end of can or additional) or don't go on track.

112dB from a road car? Get your exhaust re-done, it doesn't work.

I know it's not very PH, but while I'm sure it sounds glorious, 112dB is just unnecessary IMO.

exactly. sounds more like a blown manifold!
there are a few unlimited days around the uk. but still, fix the exhaust!

Its a standard exhaust with a sleeved mid section.

In all honesty, i think the tester might have been a bit of a fool. But those are the numbers he gave me.

If it wont pass as it is, Or have some bolt on silencers. i wont go on track.

If it's the same tester who did our car at Combe, yes he seems a bit of a jobsworth. However 112dB is LOUD and there is no possibility that it's some kind of measurement error. Your car massively exceeds all reasonable limits.

Yeah, that is well loud. Mines generally around the 102 mark and tbh that's really bit too loud, gawd knows what 112 is like!

5K revs is surely too high.

It's supposed to be 3/4 revs - so should be a bit lower than that..

That is what i thought and felt bad holding 5k rpm in neutral. the car did let out a huge pop as i let off the revs. Maybe that skewed the results.

Even 105 is pretty deafening, 112DB sounds like a mis-reading if you have a road car.

Yes any pop and bangs mess up the results .. you should let the revs die down slowly..

Cerbera's are a nightmare to get a clean db reading from.

Mine has the same exhaust, standard but with a sleeved mid section. Tested at Bedford last week and was 102.9db at 4000rpm and 105db at 5000rpm

When you say "sleeved mis-section", what is being replaced...? Cats? Silencers? What's left doing silencing?

So it's not standard then.

Book a track do unsilenced days at Donnington park. I have had my car tested at Castle Combe hundreds of times and it rarely varies, so I would say either it peaked on pop over run or your car is about 112.
4.5 thousand rev,s not 5.

Firstly, it should be 4500 rpm for the test, not 5000. Or 4650 if we are being extremely picky.
But the useable rev range is 0-6000, as the limiter is at 6200, so most testers accept 4500.
It makes a big difference, that extra 500 rpm.

Secondly, atmospheric conditions make a difference. My car has been as high as 107db at Cadwell Park on a cold damp morning. On Wednesday, dry warm and sunny, it was 101.

Finally, if as your profile says, you are in the south-east, I can lend you some clamp on silencers. I will be near Cambridge all day Tuesday. Or I can post them to you. They knock about 4-6 db off, and soften the tone. Any MSV track will test it for you at a mutually convenient time, or if you rock up when there's a track day on. That's Brands, Cadwell, Snetterton, Bedford and Oulton.

I seem to remember struggling with the noise test at Combe, despite having my cans on. Mine is standard exhaust but fully decatted.

Combe is an absolute joke for noise testing. Go and get it tested elsewhere,

For bike track days they test you at 3/4 revs (even on a litre bike) from 1 meter away. 4 of 8 people that went failed on the day with standard exhausts,

Unhappy faces all round.

The locals around combe dont like a race circuit near their pretty little village. Christ only knows why they move there then start complaining.
