op here. Its the principal , I have paid my council tax , and the park in question is not a fancy county one where u go all day . This is my local scummy park , Swanley!
The car parks are very empty now and the cars now clutter the surrounding streets..

Good, I'd pay £2 to park in a nice empty car park and let everyone else battle for space elsewhere

Surely £2 parking in London is Peanuts?

Hopefully the £2 charge will keep the scummy element away and make more room for ordinary decent people... wink

I am in the park everyday , as teaching my son to ride his bike . Sadly the large majority if the bods who use the park are "a bit council" as we say on here!!

£3 for 2 hours at Hamstead Heath last week.

The other place we go a lot is High Lodge at Thetford Forrest, this is £2.50 and hour I think? and £6.20 for 3 hours.

It is fair enough I reckon.

yes, exactly ... they already do pay via council tax...
Those not living local don't!

Without getting into a Direct v Indirect tax debate I'm afraid that if we want our LA's to keep our Council Tax down then this sort of thing is going to become the norm.

Also in London Boroughs at least, it's probably designed to stop commuters using the spaces all day.

Most places in the rest of Europe don't charge for parking at parks or beaches etc. This country takes the piss with parking charges in many places.

When we go away, cost of parking especially at beaches becomes a consideration. Over a couple of weeks holiday its a material difference.

Other countries have lower population densities. They may also apply more direct taxes and therefore not need indirect taxes as much.

I have to be honest, I'm not particularly loaded but the cost of parking has never been an issue for UK holidays. Except London but then again that has a pretty good Public Transport system

All count your selved lucky that you don't live in Nottingham.
Amongst the highest street parking costs in the country, no free parking in parks anymore, work in the city ? Then pay just under £400 to park in your COMPANY car park !Coutesy of the dreaded Workplace Parking Levy.

Traffic enforcement via CCTV everywhere in the city @ £70 a go.

All this to fund a stupid fking tram system no one wanted in the first fking place.

The local City of London owned park around here started charging £2 a day at the weekend which has recently gone up to £3. Not sure it makes much difference to most people by the looks of things.

Is exactly right op. Anyone who cannot consider that must permanently waddle around like a pregnant penguin with a balloon knot the size of a KFC bargain bucket..

Parking should by principal be free for all without any question. What issues are so extreme that deems charging acceptable? I could accept paying to park at a nice big main library or museum but not a park..

Take the bike down to Thetford Forrest a lot. Enough that the charges would start to add up if I used high lodge but, since I happen to have a bike with me, it just park somewhere free and ride 5 minutes to the trails.

Same as our local beach. They charge a fortune to use a bit of car park and have a free one 10 minutes walk away... and as we happen to be walking the dog.

These are both countryside locations, as opposed to the OP's London Parkland - so they're more a tax on convenience than necessity.

Anything to discourage people to exercise is rotten.especially as alot of people have no garden - the park is their garden.

Exactly this. Nowhere else I've been in Europe wallet rapes like the UK does for parking. It's always either free or in particularly rammed places like Madrid or Barcelona city centres or some beaches in the south of France charges are a few cents an hour and you usually pay on leaving for exactly the time to the minute you've been there. Not a thought of refusal to give change or demand for reg numbers or paying up front in sight.

I get why organizations like the National Trust have to charge but most of the run down st holes that pass themselves off as holiday resorts in the UK or individuals who charge way more than a large family round of ice creams to park in a pot holed and mud slicked field full of stinging nettles by a beach or local authorities who think charging for a visit to a invariably neglected park with flowerbeds full of weeds and a liberal scattering of used syringes, graffiti, litter and dog st all over are absolutely taking the piss.

Local authorities and people who do so are obviously too dim witted to work out they ought to be encouraging and welcoming people ready to spend time and money in the area and not shafting them vigorously up the arse before the car is even out of sight and at the same time leaving the threat of big fines and penalties if they dare to overstay. All that actually does is make everybody scuttle off promptly once the three hours or whatever is up rather than hanging around for longer and potentially supporting local businesses by having a meal in a restaurant, doing some more shopping or spending the evening in the pub.
