I purchased swmbo a car about 3-4 weeks ago, still no sign of the V5.....however what do we do about tax? Ive not had to buy a new car in a while so unsure of what the rules and legalities are, id like to thionk its still taxed by the old owner until the v5 is reissued to us?

Go online, use the green slip you got when you bought the car, enter details. Job done.

It might still show as taxed if they've not sent the V5 off but you can and should tax it yourself using the ref on the new keepers section of the old V5 the moment you purchase it.

Just go on the DVLA website and find the form for a replacement V5 and send that off. I had a similar problem a couple of months back and the seller had just forgotten to send his V5 off.

As above - use the new keeper supplement to tax online.

well, the issue is that the v5c/2 will not let us tax it online, so we have to go through the rigmarole of chasing down the new V5......

Well that's very odd, is the website not accepting the ref no?
