WOW.

I would be inviting him to a BBQ or three.

Actually he would be welcome at Christmas and Birthdays. biggrin

This new one is very quiet, almost boring.

the reason type approval specifies quieter and quieter cars is because of the increase in noise complaints. People with low-self esteem are marketed to regards to making noise. Like the 'no fear' clothes brand.
Idiots are shooting themselves in the foot. The UK is quite lucky as it has a good classic car scene and *was* powerful enough to veto EU regulations. Other countries are doing away with classic cars (Belgium only certain ays of the week and not at night) and the modification industry is being targeted.
Britain is/was a rogue EU country for noise and air pollution, it will all end in tears.

I must live in the interesting car mecca, I always spot exciting stuff about, this annoys the mrs greatly. I also travel about a bit for work, so regularly see interesting cars.

I was working near Blackbushe last year, it was full of interesting cars, alot used daily. To name a few I remember; Mk2 Focus St with RS wing and loud exhaust, e46 M3 with clubsport spoiler, cage and loud exhaust, numerous A45 AMG's,Golf R's and Focus RS's, along with lots of modern 911's, and an air cooled 90's 911. Also saw a La Ferrari and a 599 GTO in convoy at one point. There is some sort of classic car garage in Hartney Whitney also, always good for an nice spot. I've seen a Lancia Stratos rally car and a fixed roof Elan race car in there, along with vintage Bentleys and Ferraris. I also spotted a black Lancia Delta Intergrale on a drive in Yaetley.
Moved down to gosport for my next job, where I used to regularly see a grey Honda NSX, a 60's VW beetle with a turbo charged Imprezza engine, various Evos, including a red TME, which was driven daily by a female . There also used to be a white Evo II driven by a middle age lady and a black Evo IV driven by a middle aged bloke, who used to drop their kids off to the same school daily. Also used to see an older lady in a red C63 coupe every evening as I drove home, along with a supercharged Fiesta ST and a classic Impreza with equal length headers (Strange noise to be coming from an Impreza).
I also took my Monaro into Gosport one week day and came across a yellow Boxter GTS, which sounded lovely!

In my village there is; a TVR Chimeara, Toyota MR2 Turbo, C3 Corvette, 350z, Focus ST, MK2 Golf GTI.

Its strange there is so much exciting machinery around here as, in my opinion, the roads are poor for driving.

Stop saying 'low self esteeem'. You are talking bks. If people want a loud exhaust, its not always for showing off to people. How about someone who puts something tasty on their McLaren etc? You think they give a st about what people think of them or do they just like their new exhaust? What about cars (like a 458 Speciale I think) which are loud from the factory and even too loud for some track days? Low self esteem? Yeah right.

In my street there is a guy with a RS4 estate which has a wonderful sound. Think he must have a aftermarket exhaust fitted.

Round the corner there is a new RS3 but this does nothing for me. It looks very plain to be an RS model.

My favorite car in the town is a Porsche Caymen GT4 in yellow.

The yellow is a bit OTT but the car does look very special.

Funny enough many of the millionaires in this area have old battered cars but with amazing personal plates on them.

One locally has an old Range Rover which leaks oil while parked up but he could not care less.

Clearly a vehicle is just a piece of metal to him.

couldn't agree more. Uk roads have become awful not to mention farcically congested. car ownership isn't all about the driving though smile I would say over 50% personal image / egos/ boosting self esteem (feel good factor)
If it was all about the driving, we would all rush out in the rain driving morris vans with skinny tyres (James Hunt)

A chap on the other side of the estate has a Lamborghini Huracan - I think it was one of the first in the UK. Before that, he had a Gallardo.

Round the corner from him, 2014 911 Turbo - very nice.

Not far from there is, I think, an Aston Martin DB6 but it's always tucked away in the garage so I can't see properly.

Old boy on my street has two Porsche 356's. His garage is a thing of beauty; a lift and a turntable thing to manouvere them about. Sadly for him we had floods at the weekend, which has caused all kinds of damage. Hopefully he gets everything sorted.

'tasty ' on their McLaren? thats worse than low self-esteem. You need serious counciling if spending that amount of money on car with that performance isn't enough to make you feel good.

its all about feel good factor (yes, people who need to feel good, have low self-esteem) marketing companies target people to buy these cars to feel good about themselves. This single thread shows there's enough people out there to admire people wtih exotic cars and even better if theyre modified to make loud noises.

You seem to be clueless. Type approval makes road cars very quiet. Nothing is too loud for a track day unless it's been modified. Funnily enough the Italians have become one of the EUs biggest sticklers for noise pollution. New Ferrari's are quiet and refined until the 'no fear' brigade by-pass the silencers or open the valves.

Bloke across the road has a concourse DB4 Vantage. He lives behind a high hedge 100 yards away and yet when he starts it in his garage our house shakes. The first time I heard it I went outside to look for the Lancaster bomber flying overhead. cloud9

He's also just bought a Sunbeam Tiger as a slightly more usable classic.

How about I want a louder car therefore I buy a louder exhaust? Nothing to do with 'self esteem'. Do you actually know what that means?

And if you read numerous threads on here, some standard exhausts are in fact too loud for track days;

"Pistonheads vehicles you don't "get""

All those that have been modded to increase the noise level helping bring forward a total ban on all modifications, with the industry totally failing to self regulate in the last couple of decades.

I've never understood why you'd ruin the distinct engineering sound of cars such as Porsche 911s by drowning it out with a louder pipe. Although it's mostly enjoyed by Narcissists in an ever increasing Narcissistic society.
There must be other websites out there that are more suited to your tastes..

Type approval doesn't test road cars at race track speeds. It's quite ironic that cars built to race are useless on our st roads and now having to be made quiet to 'race' Have you ever wondered why track days have "noise days" on their calendar? It's because people take the piss. Local councils actually have more power than the Police with noise pollution and motorsport events end up being the target. which is sad.
It's not just track days. We lost tracks in motocross because locals where prejudice in general about bikes being too noisy (which by default they arnt)

rubbish. not everyone who drives cars ( or bikes) has low self-esteem and needs to portray or worship the sound of power

A Tesla Model S P100D would go down very badly in this thread, yet would piss on every car mentioned so far in real world 'muscle flexing' scenarios.

You clearly have super ears to be annoyed so much.

Personally, I love the sound of a supercar opening the taps.

Granted, someone with a huge exhaust on a Nova isnt the most pleasant but I normally just laugh rather than get annoyed like you do.

Nothing around here.

But when I was a kid....

There was a guy with 3 Corvette C3s. One Yellow, one red, one black, and a concours condition E-type convertible.
The vettes were about 1978... plastic bumpers etc.
Don't know what reg the Jag was.

Nothing else has come close since.
Not sure if that's as much of a statement about where I now live as it is about my sense of taste versus other people's, but the endless 4X4 / Autobahn express one-up man ship on the school run got real old real quick.
