Wow! I love the Crown, there was a near identical car to that in my village when I was a kid, I always used to stop and watch it go by whenever I saw it.

Those wheels are proper shockers.
We need better standards
Shouldn't this be on the council thread?

I actually prefer the six, whether 280 or 300, in an R107. It's not a car for going terribly fast in, anyway. Agree that it would need careful inspection, especially of the bulkhead.
I agree entirely. I've asked for the VRN so I can do a proper MOT check.
The wheels are wrong for the year and a 280 shouldn't have the spoiler on it I don't think. The weight it adds might screw up it holding up, but I think I read somewhere that you can wind up the torsion bar which is probably a job best done by a daredevil.

I wonder how many miles it's done?

Let us know how you get on with it CdG, it's a good price if it's a sound car. If you go to look, I'd try and take Steve Griffin from the club with you.

I like a straight 6 and it makes a good noise, some say the lighter nose improves handling. I wouldn't say it wants any power, the chassis is for wafting anyhow. The fuel economy (I think I get high teens) isn't going to be great on any of them.

I love our 280 but have to acknowledge that it's the least loved engine in the range which does affect the value. The run-out 500 and 300 models from 86 on are more highly prized. As time goes on, I'd hope it would get less important, I don't think many quibble over a cc or two on a pagoda. Post-facelift plastic door handles are nasty compared the chrome delights on this one, puts the sec to shame in that dept.

Original Turbo Technics MK2 GTI?

This seems good value considering what 8v's go for with higher mileage.

As a 380 owner, I respectfully beg to differ.
I'll obligingly let you have it!
It would be poor form to stage a pissing on own bonfire contest...

Honestly, I think they are fantastic cars and when picking one out, the engine choice is not going to impact the ownership experience as much as other factors, like it being rotten or painted an absurd colour. cool

I'll let you know what I find out if there's a response to my mail. As I'm out celebrating a familial birthday tonight, and then attending a military funeral tomorrow, I suspect it may be some time before I was able to make any plans to view, even were I willing to risk significant personal harm if Madame deG finds out about it.

I do like it though, despite an evasive ad and an absolutely minging driver's seat.

It's got nearly 200,000 miles on it.

MOT history shows the miles racking up, with few advisories and nothing too scary. Test expires in June.

That seems too cheap to me, I didn't even think it would be in thread budget.

Proper Shadows are beyond budget for this thread. I had hoped to find a nice Bentley T2, but they're well over these days. Perhaps a Mulsanne or similar would be acceptable?

  • I am obviously a hamfisted luddite and can't get the Ebay link to work.**
Looking at the MOT history (or lack of), Sir might like some brave pills.

The ad states this particular Spirit was sold new to Sir Cecil Burney, Admiral of the Fleet, who, my cursory research indicates, died in 1929. Must have specified a heck of an options list if it took until 1982 to build the car.

Seems like a silly amount of money compared to a soft-top (and because it is), but my god it's hot.

Would need a manual conversion too.
There's a few grand of profit in there for the seller.

A quick spin through the classifieds in europe suggests these are plentiful and within thread budget. It also suggests these are robust as there are plenty well through the 200k km mark, and several well over 300k.

You may even sneak one with the later 3.0 six pot.

I suspect this Sir Cecil Burney (d. 2002) was the grandson of that Sir Cecil Burney (d 1929).

His father (named Charles) suggests that the family only had the "C" page of the boy's names book.
