Loving this one tonight.

OK, it's a 2006 and it's quite high-tech, with a hybrid drivetrain (and probably LPG, too). But achingly retro cool.

Produced for the Japanese taxi market - diesels are banned in Japanese cities, so these traditional old taxis gained modern hybrid power.

For no discernible reason, I really like that.

Because it is utterly brilliant in every way, including being rubbish in some ways. 70s Japanese stuff rocks.

Should I buy a W140 in the exact same Pearl Blue/Grey leather/M119 engine /8 hole 16" alloy combination as my R129? And what will happen to my marriage if I do?

No, but yes. No as in you'd get very bored having two sets of identical oily bits and same colours, knowing that you could have something completely different for the second car. Yes as in they'd be an amusing set.

It's a very good colour scheme on a 129, I am perhaps less sure about it on the 140, but I wish my 129 were that blue rather than boring silver.

Yes. You cannot have enough old mercs smile

Sometimes I wish mine were all dark green.

I really like this - W123 280 estate with air con. Lovely, retro and barge I think. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Is it just the craving for social approval and the desire to collect, to possess? I've barely touched my R129 (300 miles since buying it, most in one hit moving it from East London to North Yorkshire) and already I'm hot and horny to buy a W140.

There's a 600SEL out there in 348 Pearl Blue, on a J plate like my R129. But the price is chunky.

It's definitly not social approval, as nobody else I know (aside from the barge thread here) has any understand. It is an addiction and a desire to collect. If I won millions on the lotto I would set about buying every W124 300E 4 door I could get my hands on, the earlier the better. Even though I have one I want more. Rather strange!

Lovely 600SEL apart from this deeply naff badge on the inside - and the price.

The r129s really benefit from being used a lot and not standing, in my experience - and they are very usable. Aside from this the biggest issue was coming back to the car and finding that someone had hit it in a car park - this has happened 3 times to me now, I have not had any such incident with any other car I have driven. I can only assume this is because they are quite low, with a long bonnet so people don't see them out of their window in modern cars.

I... actually... quite... liked the 600SEL interior badging. loser

Top of the range at the very point of peak MB engineering and build quality. But like Bruno Sacco said, "four inches too tall". Or in this case, four grand too expensive.

Your Autotrader "Any Mercedes to 1990" search is deeply dangerous. I hoped getting the R129 (it's on a C-Tek and fired up first time last month when I rolled the tyres) had zapped my urge to buy an R107 from 1977-1979. Apparently not.

Only one MOT recorded online (from Nov 2016) and that with the dread advisory "corrosion evident underside". Perhaps it's been for a long holiday (and spectacular haircut) in Ireland.

Oh, and if you'd rather one that didn't have the 600SEL badge but did have brotheltastic RED.... VELOUR...

However the price seems absurd to me, perhaps I don't understand what makes this one a "limousine" as opposed to an SEL. Is it the window blinds?

I quite like that - but surely they got the decimal point in the wrong place?

Zonergem I reckon you'd be so at home with the Barge1-5 thread "crew" There's magnificent knowledge of all these cars there. I like the idea of a W140, but would only want a v12... nowadays given the price I'd go for a 760 BMW.

You spotted my search... it's great isn't it. I ended up saving pictures from a pre-1990 classic MB for many hundreds of £ks!

I lurk all the time on the Barge thread, though it seems no-one has actually bought a car in some time. Hence the suspicion that my desire to buy a rusty heap of tin is the midlife answer to smoking just to copy the cool kids (*ok, Barge Losers), even though it tastes horrid and makes you feel sick (*promotes divorce).

The fleet addition that would best fit my wants/needs matrix (98% the former, natch) would be a G Wagon, of the entirely humble un-blinged 1980s flavour. The LWB silver above is cool and I did strongly consider the gold SWB 7 seat 280 GE that went through Anglia Car Auctions in November. Seems I had a lucky swerve though as it has made an immediate re-appearance in the next Anglia Auction - either purchaser didn't complete or it's a total lemon. Photos in a different location so he's got it home only to undergo insta-bork?

Technically it's not a limousine, it's a car. A limousine has a partition between the driver and the rear passenger compartment.

I do like the red teddy bear seats. Lovely smile

Shame it's such a horrendous white exterior.
Looks at least £12k too steep to me.

I keep looking at this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-TOYOTA-CROWN-3-0-AU...

It's kind of a poor man's Lexus. (and the same colour as our Alphard - pearl white over silver)

Some retro loveliness.

Cuteness at top of budget.

LHD, but worth 8 grand for the colours alone.

And finally a yummy affordable classic. A bag of Werthers and a flat cap of a car. Delightful.
