Without doing any due diligence, the red one. With the wheels from the grey one. Number 1: http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

This is, of course, the answer. 0a was trying to trick us.
Spot on I wonder what the owner wants for this SL600? No price probably means a fortune. The days of Harry's £5k car are long gone, unfortunately. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C759323

Better colours on your car but I wouldn't buy it. Not necessarily because of the price, although it's toppy to say the least, but because of the crap, irritating advert and the stupid watermarked photos. Without meeting the vendor, I know he's an irritating tt.
I cannot find it in my heart to contradict you there.Anyone interested in the mighty 450SEL 6.9 might want to read the original Autocar road test here:

Yet another mega-performance icon that today struggles to keep up with a 2.0 diesel BMW, it would appear. Incidentally in March 1979 they were just under £29K new, equivalent to £140K now inflated by RPI. Given that a new base model BMW 520D has the same accommodation, slightly higher performance, goes three and a half times as far on a gallon, and has a lot more standard equipment, all for about £35K, progress has indeed been remarkable.
Never mind, I'd still have one if I could afford it.

This sums it up for me. The wantage is really important, and I just don't feel it for the objectively 'better' modern cars. I guess those of us that that like the flawed cars of our youth/today's classics are similarly flawed in terms of judgement, which is why we frequent threads like this.

I still have a lot of Manta love. I had 3 - a B series coupe, a C hatch and eventually my dream car, a GT/E Exclusive saloon...
... in the snow
...at Castle Coombe
...a car soooo nice, even the cat wanted to help polish it
(A little while later, I went further back in time, skipped the A series (still an itch to be scratched one day) all the way to an Opel GT
...car which might still just about come in thread budget if you could find one?)

Also, is it really possible to spend 51k on the restoration, excluding labour?0a said:

This is why I've just gone from a 18 month old X5 to 12 year old E55. Modern stuff is very accomplished but generates no love or desire, whereas once I'd driven the merc, I had to have one.
I could say something similar about my 24 year old MX5/Eunos but I'm sure others would say it should be an old lotus or MG.

If I could find one of those I'd want it regardless of cost. Looks fantastic....car which might still just about come in thread budget if you could find one?)

You could spend £51K on new parts from Mercedes without breaking sweat when restoring a Pagoda or one of these, or indeed any '70s Merc. Including labour there are plenty of people whose total resto bills for Pagodas and R107s run well into six figures: the highest I know of so far is a total bill north of £200K including labour, but excluding the original price of the car, for a Pagoda, which compared to one of these is a small, simple machine. Even Jay Leno, who has all the money in the world to spend on his cars, and loves spending it, commented recently that while it's great that Mercedes goes to such lengths to make parts available for old cars via the Classics division, they sure like to charge for them.
German outfit:

In California:

However, given the list of work which is described in the advert as units being restored by external suppliers it could be reasonable to assume that the £51K may include the complete cost of various sub-assemblies bought in, e.g. the bill from D-Trim, not just the cloth and leather and metals and plastics used.
Incidentally. big love to the Opel GT, any Manta A, Manta B or Monza. I only managed to have a Manta B out of that lot, though as a kid I did get to ride around in another family's Manta A when they were current. They also had an XJS in the family and I preferred the Manta at the time, for its looks.
