So while it will continue to depreciate
*** Disclosure: Owner of a very similar car! ***

As has been said, 4.7 Vantages were built in much smaller numbers than the 4.3. Add to that many Roadsters tended to have the SportShift automated gearbox, that makes a proper manual 4.7 roadster a relatively rare thing. Numbers in the PH classifieds tend to be in the single digits (five atm).

These won't appreciate in the way we're seeing manual DBS's go up by, but I don't think £50k will be far from the bottom of the curve for good examples of this model.

My running costs are c£1k a year and, whatever happens, you'll never lose as much as you will the minute you drive that TT off of the dealership forecourt!

I do, and I have.

I know it's predictable and hackneyed, but I was genuinely left cold by the Porsche. Ballistically fast, but did nothing for me.

I have a small child, so looked at getting a 997 C4S Cab or even stretching to a 991 Targa. I really wanted to love it so I could take the family out in it, but driving home in the Aston and having fun at sane speeds (but making that wonderful noise) left me in no doubt there is, as you say, absolutely no contest wink

Cost me a Land Rover Disco 4 though... redface

If Aston look after their image and keep making great cars, these will be just fine.

This isn't an apt comparison. New vs used is problematic enough when you try, but this isn't even trying.

Well, if you are not bothered about the driving pleasure, brilliant engineering, 4wd safety etc etc... why not go for something like this wallowing elephant...

currently for sale in the classifieds here - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b... - four seats, just as fast just as expensive, just as "prestigious" and just as thirsty.

wouldnt own one out of warranty. 997 cab for me.
My experience,

997 C4S Cab - Side of the road then a £12k bill from Hartech.
V8 Vantage Roadster - 1 headlight and a bit of leather trim undone itself.

The V8 vantage is a lovely car but it will always be looked on as the bottom of the range "girly model". Great for the wife not so good if you are a bloke - you need the v12 vantage/DBS/DB9 etc

Thanks for the suggestion Ogrodz thumbup

But I'm not sure you're getting it.

It's because I am bothered about driving pleasure that I chose the Aston over a Porsche, as brilliantly engineered, 4WD-equipped and safe a 997 4S Cab may be.

A SportPack equipped Vantage is anything but wallowy, something this article and almost every other road test points out. The fact the engine and the gearbox sit within the wheelbase, contributing to a 49:51 weight distribution, actually make it properly pointy.

Didn't you recently extol the virtues of the B7 RS4 Cab on another thread?! rolleyes

Anyway, it's all subjective isn't it, and a debate ('to Pork or not to Pork') that will rage forever on.

Horses, courses etc etc

The noise alone from the Vantage is a good reason for choosing one over the Audi. Add in the looks and the heritage and you'd be mad not to pick the Aston.

Really? I genuinely don't think this is how these cars are perceived.

Ditto, that comment is just odd. I have only seen one Aston Vantage that was for girls and that was a baby blue V12 being driven by a lady in LA. I have driven a V8 Vantage S quite a lot and it is quite heavy to drive so probably not a non-petrolhead girl's default choice.

Different people different opinions....... I have an Aston, I love the brand, just reactions I got when talking about buying one and speaking to people after buying a DB9 - friends referred to the V8 as the baby Aston or the girly one, no Aston is really girly, it's all relative. Lovely shape to it. The DB9 is sometimes referred to as the older mans Aston, maybe because it has 2 extra seats for the kids. No offence meant.

It's subjective. Although, I agree with Kiekegaard.

Oh ignore me, I can barely get a set of trackday tyres for the 106 through the household budget, let alone the costs to run an Aston!

Cheapest used V10 R8 Spyder is £65k though, so not exactly comparable.

(To be honest though, I was surprised how cheap/affordable/value/depreciated (delete as appropriate) they have become!)

Incorrect.

For that price they absolutely ARE comparable and for me the R8 wins, no contest. Newer car, lower mileage and it's a manual too...

Very true - probably good to bring in a third party with suitable experience here. A fair review from Chris Harris below methinks - and as he is sporting a beard for this one, perhaps we should take note!
