The noise alone from the Vantage is a good reason for choosing one over the Audi. Add in the looks and the heritage and you'd be mad not to pick the Aston.
V8 Vantage sounds better than a V10 R8? Oh no. Oh no no no no no.

It's subjective. Although, I agree with Kiekegaard.
Ok, fair enough. Many, after seeing this ad though, would argue for the R8...

To this day, the noise the engine makes in that footage gives me chills in a way no normal road-going V8 Vantage ever could.

A 4.7 Vantage at £50k is a reasonably safe place to put your money IMO. Running costs are not as bad as described in a lot of threads

I also like the R8, both V8 and V10, they certainly look the part but the interior let's it down when compared to other cars mentioned here. Nice choice to have to make though.

I think the Aston has a bit more 'x factor' about it though

I can also see why people would be attracted to a TTRS. Big power, easy to drive quickly, safe, cheap (relatively) to run. Not sure I'd buy one new though.

For that price they absolutely ARE comparable and for me the R8 wins, no contest. Newer car, lower mileage and it's a manual too...

All good fella! For what it's worth, I'm not saying I don't like Vantage's as a car in their own right, far from it. smile

Well, I guess there has to be one person out there who wants one smile
Really? R8 is a lovely thing to drive - V8 or V10. Not the last word in involvement or dynamics but then nor are any of the other cars mentioned here. Looks great as a rag top also, to my eyes. I know it's 'only' an Audi but a) since when are petrolheads badge snobs? and b) this all started with a discussion of the new TT.

You make a good point.

Now R8 Spyders have dropped below £60k (which I'm sure you can option a new TTRS up to..), you could argue it would have made a more meaningful new vs old comparison!

This. When I've finally moved into my renovated house (if ever!), my V8V is going to be sold. Lovely car, have had no major issues with it, running costs about £1200 a year for servicing and fixing small things (malfunctioning door locks, new boots struts on mine), and that includes 1 year with the major service at £1400. Audi R8 is a step up dynamically. Although I want a V10 manual, rather than the V8.

The vantage is a lovely car. The 4.3 is fast enough for our roads, but today's super-hatches are as fast, and faster in the twisties, so the TTRS will be a lot quicker. That is less of an issue for me, truth be told - I love the Aston's looks and noise. Maintenance in the Aston will be far less than depreciation than the TT, but you will get minor issues. The Aston's cabin looks dated now too, unsurprisingly.

Now add a sound file. Seriously! They sound more like a VW camper van than something that can raise the hairs on a mans arms at 7000rpm like the R8 or Aston or Maser (just followed a Maser around Europe and its V8 engine note and blips were a passionate design achievement). I dare say that can be fixed in the Porsche with a few grand at Sharkwerks or somewhere but I was staggeringly disappointed to test drive a C4S convertible - you could barely hear its tinkly Singer exhaust over the scuttle shake. But that stunning PDK, superb turn in and wicked throttle balance though smile But for me its a dealbreaker.
