I've almost lost count how many I've had
528i 162-205k without skipping a beat
540i 128-138k gearbox did get clunky
525i 192-206k miles, needed clutch and £1000 spent, not worth it
530i 154-166k and still going, for me probably the best of the 39 range.

Then I've got
528 saloon for breaking
523 Tourer for breaking
528 Tourer fixed and sold on

Great cars.Worked at BMW UK for 30 years now so know what I am talking about.Try to get one with a specialist/dealer history. 523 worth looking at as they get less hard driven than the 528.530i is a gem.One of ours has done 400K but still going strong, nicer to drive than newer cars and much more refind.Battleship build quality, the E39 was built to the standard of the seven series, the E46 was not.Cost you more to run than the average car but will last forever if you look after it.Any questions, bring them on...................

Fiat Panda ... 10 days hire from Hertz at Bari = £318.58 redcard

https://www.hertz.co.uk/rentacar/reservation/#vehi...
Driving 528i to Bari and back - £400 in fuel + hotel + 4 days of your life wasted.

Great comparison otherwise.
Renting from an airport and or train station incurs an extra 15/20% charge too which they don't include in that price for the Panda. Also CDW is mandatory so that's another few hundred quid...Italy is the most lethal/expensive country to rent a car in.
I recently hired an 8 day rental through the Hertz at Termini Station. I thought it was pretty good value and a more pleasant customer service experience than most countries.

There is one catch that may be exclusive to Italy but potentially not only to Hertz: the contract mentioned a 2,000 euro excess in the event of damage that was unwaivable. So even opting for the highest coverage (which I didn't bother with for obvious reasons) you couldn't escape that fee, regardless of fault!
I thought it was bad when I could only reduce the excess on the 420D GC I rented to 250 quid.
Having said that $500AUD is small a price to pay to roll $80k worth of car into a Highland Loch.

Had a 2002 520i which I loved but it drank oil at revs and couldn't work out why. It wasn't smoking or dropping any but eventually gave up and part exed it for a 325i which is nice but when you slam the door on the E39 it sounded proper.

Great to see all the love for the E39! I have one (530i T), had it for 7 years and really cannot think what I'd replace it with. I confirm that they do need staying on top of in terms of maintenance and its not cheap, but always less than the depreciation on newer cars.

Lovely shed, just too cheap!!

Thought I'd say a quick hello and introduce myself as the guy buying this. Always had a soft spot for an E39. Actually spotted this last Tuesday and agreed to see it today, as it looked ideal. Imagine my horror when i saw it pop up as a Shed of The Week, bo77ock5 I thought, it'll be gone in no time at all, before I can get to it. I'd been in contact with the seller during the week, and yes someone apparently agreed to train up to Hull from London on Saturday and have it.

Fortunately for me though, that didn't come off, so I duly went to have a look see today, and agreed a sale, and left a deposit. I'll pick it up tomorrow eve.

The car is a huge credit to it's seller, it's been kept in great nick, and seller has been a pleasure to deal with. Big history file of receipts and history, I can reiterate the views of the prev poster from Hull, the car has been well looked after. You could eat the proverbial tea off the engine, there's not a trace of dirt or rust on it. A few dents, but nothing of any significance at all.

I'm a very happy person, and looking forward to running this one immensely.

Great stuff! I suspect the only problem you'll have with it is finding something good enough to replace it with when the time comes, all e39's are old cars now but they are honestly that good. I had a 535i for three years, replaced that with an M5 that nearly bankrupt me so I had to sell it after a year, I actually welled up as it was driving up the road when I sold it! I then bought a mk3 Mondeo Titanium X but being wrong wheel drive I couldn't get on with it at all so that was replaced with a manual e46 330d and as good as it is everytime I drive it I think 'it's not a 5...'
So, I've gone full circle and I should be the proud owner of a 540i on the weekend! smile

I am approaching my one year anniversary of E39 ownership. I am seriously struggling to understand why this is so cheap. My 2002 530I Sport manual cost £3800, I can only assume that I paid a premium for a sub-80k mileage, and from observing the market the price I paid doesn't look out of the ordinary.

The buyer seems to have a fantastic bargain. And regarding continental touring - I have just got back from a cycle tour around Switzerland. The 530I was loaded with three bikes on a tow hitch mounted rack, two passengers plus luggage and still returned ~450 miles to a tank whilst cruising at 95-110 mph through Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Frogland and Switzerland. bks to hiring a Panda!

I just had a drive in my 2003 525i touring manual - I have not driven it for a while.
Great value now (paid much less than a £ grand 6 months ago with fsh 2 owners and sensible miles) but good lord it's a dull thing to drive its a great big numb barge that's strangling a superb engine.

That's a lot of car with not a lot of engine, what were you expecting? And if you're not driving it all that often then it's probably broken as well?

I've had two,

1999 528i and a 2002 530i Sport. Both excellent, the 528i had the nicer engine. Both cost me a fortune though and I got fed up of the maintenance costs.
