Thinking of either a 981 Cayman or F Type S/R for the next car.

Leaning towards the F Type.

Which would you have and why?

For me, weight and size. Gross weight 1655kgs vs 2 tons! and 4379 mm vs 4469 mm. Cayman feels way shorter and more practical.

But I run a 997 Turbo which is IIRC lighter and shorter than both, with usable seats in the back...

Assuming you are leaning towards a S or Gts Cayman (based on you looking at an S or R F-type) I would be going for the Gts Cayman.

Superior drivers car and in my opinion the best looking out of the two.

Thanks for the link pretty useful!

Was looking at the S Cayman vs F Type S - but also F Type R Vs GTS would be a fair comparison! Hadn't considered the GTS actually - if i could stretch to a GT4 it would be no contention smile

For reference, my 2005 Audi A6 weighed 2 tons. To my mind, a two seater sports car should never weigh the same as a 5 seater large estate that's nearly 5 metres long.

I always thought of the F Type as more of a GT than a sports car, which explains the weight. Personally I'd get a good long test drive in both and that will probably make your mind up.

My 911 Turbo weighs 1700 kgs fully loaded. My previous 928 GTS (a classic GT car) weighed the same - 1700 kgs. Both with rear seats that work rather than being a flight of fancy. And both reliant on basic mechanics to keep the car pointed forwards, rather than clever electronics.

Today's GT cars tend to be nothing more than a heavy saloon in fancy clothes with an overly powerful engine to compensate. Look at the Bentley. Or the new Merc GT.

Having driven V6 and V8 F-types and a Cayman, I'd buy an Evora. More fun to drive, more dramatic and weirdly more practical than either.

If I have to pick one of the OP's choices it'd be a Cayman. The F-Type driving experience is disappointing, the Cayman didn't feel that special at normal road speeds.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you can buy a GT4 new anymore.

As with the post above, I'd go for the Cayman out of those two but I'd take an Evora over either if it's in budget.

By all means call in at the Lotus garage on your way to the Porsche dealership. smile

The jag is a strange one; they've produced a fundamentally good car which ends up being neither one thing nor another. A GT with overly firm ride and very little luggage space.

What's the odds of there being a Lotus dealership on the way to the Porsche one? Or indeed within fifty miles of wherever the OP lives. hehe

Can't buy any variation of the 981 new anymore

You recall incorrectly. You're looking at gross vehicle weight for the Cayman and F Type, that is the maximum weight set by the manufacturer they are allowed to carry including the weight of the car. The Cayman actually weighs 1398kg net and the base F-Type 1725kg net.

The base F-Type weighs the same as my wife's 3 series estate. It's an utter embarassment and insult to the term 'sports car'. It's an uncomfortable GT with 2 seats and a farty exhaust.

I would save myself plenty of money in this circumstance and buy a 987.2 S. Fantastic car and can be had for about £25k.

shhhhhhhh. 987.2S prices are a well-kept secret and I'd like it to remain that way! IMHO it's also the best-looking Cayman generation.

Prices of that generation of Cayman are absurdly low when you compare than to 997 prices!
