And after watching the video of the Merc S class with the F1 pipes (From the "Cars that sound so good it's just plain wrong" thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... ), I would now like an E61 M5 with a similar exhaust

Get one! If you are somewhat sensible about it, it doesnt even need to be a disaster.
I know the thought of a 105hp 4-banger doesnt excite many, but i love my 147, it makes a decent noise with stock parts, holds its own around corners, and is a lovely place to be, and a lovely thing to see, compared to the onslaught of rectangular grey teuto-mobiles. As boring as it may be from a performance point of view, it makes my day a bit brighter every time i drive it, something that couldnt be said for the more sensible competitors.
Oh, I'll get there eventually. Alfa's reputation makes convincing the other half an uphill battle however!I know the thought of a 105hp 4-banger doesnt excite many, but i love my 147, it makes a decent noise with stock parts, holds its own around corners, and is a lovely place to be, and a lovely thing to see, compared to the onslaught of rectangular grey teuto-mobiles. I have another one, which is so wrong on so many levels....
This thing is on eBay ...I find it oddly tempting...refurbish and use for Goodwood, events etc...

To purchase this, put in legal seats for the ring, make it only loud above 4000rpm, and have a little fun during Touristenfahrt.

Mine is simple enough.
Buy an old arnage.
Ive found a couple of likely cars, only the potential for crippling cost when something goes wrong is putting me off.
I think in 6 months or so i might do even if for a very short time. If i dont i will never know.
I've always fancied doing the same but as with you the possible borkage costs put me off.Buy an old arnage.

After watching Fully Charged this morning I quite fancy having a Volvo P1800 converted to an electric car.
I can assure you, cost really are as ruinous as you imagine (try 18K in one year on maintenance and upkeep!) but if you don't do it, you are truly missing out. A sorted one is a fantastic thing to drive/own whereas a tired one is merely great!
I'd like to one day build a Mercedes 190E Evolution copy using modern amg brakes and suspension gubbins and either a tweaked C230 superchaged 4-pot or a C32 supercharged V6.
Or even using the engine from an AMG E36. Afterall, the 190E came with an inline six in the 2.6.
Weird I know but I just like old Mercs.
Or put a Merc E300 3 litre 6-pot diesel into a series three Landrover. (With heavy duty driveshafts, methinks.)

For a few years now I've been wanted to move to North America and become a long distance trucker, preferably in one of these two:
though the reality is going to be far less fun than what's in my head... quick google suggests that EPA restrictions means you can't drive anything nice anymore

Things I still need to tick off:
1 Something with pop up headlights.
2 A shooting brake.
3 Something with a V10.
4 Something with a V12.
5 Morgan 3 wheeler.
6 Something that makes me go "Shiiiiiiiiiit" when I do an emergency start.
Ticking 1,2, 4 and possibly 6 in one go..1 Something with pop up headlights.

Although a V10 Morgan 3-wheeler should tick (6) so you could do the whole lot in two cars.
