The only problem I forsee is that with it being hybrid they're basically making the powertrain massively harder to work on/upgrade. It makes sense for BMW to go down this route, but the Supra name is linked at its roots with modifications and big power upgrades, (like the GTR). If you kill that then you're surely going to put a massive dint in sales?

They'd be better giving it a different name all together.

Just FYI these "Toyotas" are running around on Munich plates and coming in and out of the BMW M building on the Meuspath industry park.

If you can point to the "Nürburgring Toyota Technical Centre" on a map, that'd be nice. Because they normally run the Lexus and Toyota cars out of RingRacing and Boxberg. When a car is on DAU plates, not M, it'll be a Toyota wink

I really like the shape.

Surely the shape can't be relied upon? Look at the spy shots of the working Mk4 MX-5 prototype, which externally was a set of stretched Mk3 panels, and bore no resemblance to the finished car.

I'm not expecting it to look like an FT-1, but if they come up with a grown-up GT86 with old-school power, I'll be interested. Sadly I expect it'll be priced where a load of distracting tech will need to be thrown in to justify the price.

The Supra name is surely linked with big, heavy, not especially nice semi-sports cars bought by people in their 50s when new. People could make big power from them eventually once the depreciation bottomed them out, but they were never good cars. They were cruisers - slightly sportier soarers. The Supra has no real history - it just had a the lead in a popular film which brought it a little attention.

I've no idea what it's going to really be though. It will be heavy for sure, and too expensive, but apart from that? I don't see it being anything interesting.

So you're saying that Toyota are very good at disguising their mules while simultaneously claiming it can't be a Supra because it doesn't look like it.. hmm?
This car has i-drive buttons, so it's never going to be a toyota. They will show you prototype when they want but you will never see a "spy shots" from that car. I don't know where they test their prototypes, but when they come to nurburgring they are very close for being a production ready.

If it's a joint development, anyone thought that BMW might be letting Toyota get some space in their Ring workshops? You know, what with Toyota not having their own and usually getting space in other workshops.

Same with the wheels/lights etc. It's a mule they're trying to disguise, they'll probably just pick wheels/lights out of a parts bin or use generic parts (like those rear lights look like trailer lights, poorly fitted). They know people will be snapping pictures of test mules, it would make sense for them to use mismatched/random parts as part of the disguise.

Could be the BMW though but with it being joint development, BMW testing is also testing parts Toyota will be using as it's shared platform.

A Supra with supercar performance and the dynamics to match... the quickest front-engined, rear-drive car yet point to point - and that includes the new BMW M3

You are entitled to your opinion, but be aware that the weight of public and expert opinion acknowledges the 1993 MkIV Supra as a thoroughbred performance car, worthy of comparison with the contemporary M3 or 928.

So how different will the BMW and supra be, will it be gt86/brz basicly the same thing or mk4 mx5/fiat different engines and styling?

Looking forward to see on the road either way, another rear wheel drive sports car from Toyota a welcome addition to balance all the fwd hybrid hatches they sell.

I'd guess more MX5/124.

Headlights look particularly un-BMW. I'd say it's very likely a Toyota model.
