How do you find road and wind noise in the VRS? seems to be a common complaint on some reviews and forums that there is a lack of sound deadening.
It was certainly an issue in the Mk2 VRS we had, lots of wind noise around the rear windows, the MK3 is much improved. There is a bit of tyre noise on rough surfaces like most modern cars with wide'ish tyres but its not excessive imo

I'm seriously considering a vRS 230 estate, though a spot of man-maths may be needed to justify the extra expenditure of fuel over the 2.0 Turbo-diesel.

I'd be very interested in what sort of MPG you got over the course of this road-trip, assuming you measured it at all!

Here you go! http://images.pistonheads.com/nimg/34968/Skoda_sep...

That was just the return journey... and keep in mind we spent a lot of time on German Autobahns, and it had 2 bikes on the back of it and plenty of weight in it. And it was driven without any consideration for MPG!

Ive had mine for about 2.5 months but only done around 650 miles - most of that is on the school run and local driving - that gets around 35mpg.

I've had mine 18 months , just tripped over 11,000 miles and mine is 35mpg also , its never been as low as 31 mpg !

On a continental road trip last year i had 41-42 out of it taking it easy at steady 70-75mph

It certainly goes ok, even with a bike or two stuck on the back! ;-)

Thanks for that - interesting - not as bad as I thought, the 35mpg that most people get. If you AVERAGED 60mph over 917 miles, I'm not surprised the MPG took a battering!

Currently running a 525d touring with 3.0 turbo diesel straight 6 - gorgeous but 9 years and 156,000 miles means it's probably going to need replacing soon. Torn between another sensible turbo-diesel, or a vRS 230 or a Golf R estate, though conscious that these cars may cause me to drive in a fashion known to the police as 'making progress' and my wife as 'too fast'.

I love the new E class Merc estate, but that's way out of my range at 37k. Mazda 6 estate looks pretty good. Quite like the Mondeo, not really a fan of the Focus ST estates, Audis are (to my eyes) rather generic and dull, ditto Vauxhall Insignia/Astra, Seat Cupra ST 290 nutter bd also a contender, though the cabin's as dull as anything, Passat too sensible, 3 series too small, Superb estate a contender - the 2.0 280bhp 4x4 has appeal, though will probably struggle to do more than 25mpg.

Saw a Golf R estate to lease for a truly amazing deal of £239pcm over 24 months, though not sure whether to go down the leasing road.

After a twelve week wait, it has arrived!
So far after a 200 mile drive from Ayr in the pouring rain I'm happy.
The in gear acceleration is good and the motorway ability in sixth is impressive.
The engine is only 10 miles old but it feels quite loose and willing to rev. Economy on a the gentle run was 33mpg (not that I care much : ) ). The last bit of the journey on the fairly twisty B999 was fun, you can feel the dif trying to tighten your line and I'm looking forward to playing with the settings.

I had to go to IKEA on the way home and the car coped well with its huge boot. Refinement is ok, the cabin is a comfy but quite loud place to be.

The cruise control and lane assist work well if your feeling lazy or tired.

I've been reading James' observations with interest and everyone who has seen the car has commented positively. The car certainly doesn't have the baggage that some of the German brands.
As for the Chavy Alloys I love them....

Although they do look better dirty. I've been looking for a set of 18" Alloys for the winter tyres, possibly in gold or bronze for that 80's look.
Overall after a day I''m chuffed.

What tyres are you running by the way?

Just ordered a set of Pilot Sport 4s to replace the current SportContact 5s (grippy, but wear quickly and are noisy as they wear, in my experience)...

If it fking ugly car week this week on PH ? Bentayga and now this ? Undercoat grey ?

If I asked an alloy wheel manufacturer to make the most ugly wheel possible, even more ugly than the chav-master central Insignia VXR wheel, he'd probably not come up with something quite as hideous as those on the Skoda !

What's happening to the world of cars and design ? Have we lost the plot completely ?

It was fun when we wanted it to be, relaxing when it needed to be and even on our mammoth 917-mile non-stop drive home it remained incredibly comfortable.
Interesting. I'm looking for a replacement for my Mk 2, and on the list of requirements are seats more comfy than the Mk2. I had previously not looked too closely at the Mk3 for that reason... I might have a closer look now.

What's surprising about the Mk 2 is that the passenger's seat is less well supported on a longer drive than the driver's. (I thought my wife was just fussy until we swapped for a 200 mile stint, after which I felt 10 years older!) Was your passenger as comfortable as you were?

The Tyres are Pirelli P Zero's only had the car for a bit so can't really comment. Will probably put on Michelin Pilot Sport for the summer later as they have a
Ways been good. Continental Winter Contacts are awesome in the snow, so I will be getting an 18" set of those.
As for George's comments everyone I've spoken says the Grey is cool, and it makes a change from White, it does look better than in the photos. Admittedly the VRS race blue is my favourite shade, but not avalible.
The wheels are marmite. As for the Bentley most people would agree it's not pretty...

According to the dealer, the most popular VRS option is the black design pack with the 19" wheels. Every VRS in the dealer seemed to have them. Chavy or not they are popular...

Looks great - just like mine in meteor grey smile

Agree with the diff comments, tends to come in play when accelerating mid bend when then body and weight are settled. You can feel it pull in harder where normally understeer would come in to play.

Octavia update.
For the first time in my time as a car owner, a guy at the petrol station came over to compliment the car and the colour. Not bad for a humble Skoda. As for the wheels they are very popular with the kids at work, but perhaps the opinions of teenagers are not to be trusted!

The colour and overall design look spot on but the alloys ruin it for me, I'd be look for a different style personally.

Still, tis' a good motor - I do like them, well chosen!

I've had nothing but compliments about my car and wheels. Moon white 230 hatch. I wasn't convinced by the pictures of the wheels I'd seen but they look MUCH better in the flesh.

This^^^. "German car baggage", about as relevant as historic Skoda baggage, and "you can talk at motorway speed without raising your voice" Yeah me too in a 11 year old, 100k mile A4 Avant.
