Thing is, Bentley (wisely) are deliberately not going after the RR's crown of 'Best 4x4xFar'. Having superior off-road ability has always been the core RR attribute and they market it as that; some buyers may even have a real want/need for that ability. I wouldn't think that is so important to the typical Bentley buyer - in reality it has all the off-road ability it will ever need.MDMA . said:

Diesels are for people pretending to be wealthy, i.e. those well off but still have to work to a budget but I thought Bentleys are for actual, properly wealthy people for who fuel cost is just not an issue ?

Power delivery, surely the W12 600 odd bhp lump does anything a diesel lump can or anyone can reasonably need ?
Sound, am sure it will sound better than a 106 diesel but there should be no clatter or hint of tight arse diesel noise, it may sound good, for a diesel.
Range, ok, it may go a bit further, all the way to Monaco on one tank, but would you clatter up to your hotel in a diesel ?
Resale, are Bentley owners really worried about a minor difference in resale ?
Am sure it will sell, but cant see who would buy it, what is the thought process where you end up at an 150 grand diesel SUV, whats next a Gulfstream with an Ryanair sourced interior ?
Is it for some £999 a month lease special ?

No 'proper' locking diff 4WD system - target market doesn't care.
Subjective looks - target market doesn't care.
That its a tarted up Q7 - target market doesn't care.
Various VAG components - target market doesnt care.
I doubt Bentley cares either given they are selling every single one they can make and having to increase production to cope.

We don't. What we do find annoying in the cars we travel in the front of is having to plan around refuelling. This is particularly irksome if you're in the mountains or en route to the Med. So 30mpg vs 10mpg is much more convenient for the same size tank.
To all those dissing the car go and drive one - they are (the W12 that is) bloody fantastic to drive - power delivery is effortless and smooth and it sounds pretty good too.
They are not the best of lookers but they are beginning to grow on me. Will I buy one? No not until they stop to £70k at which point they will make a Range Rover seem pointless.

I am not a fan of the aesthetics either having seen them in te metal, but not sure 'pathetic' is a word I would choose to describe what can only be described as a global commercial success.

probably 50 percent better on fuel, not 300 percent.
I dont mind the looks but I think I would find it a bit embarrassing, a few round here now and you can almost hear people muttering rude words under their breath at the owners, probably jealousy but it is a bit too blingy, but that is just me being a bit of an anti snob, am sure I could learn to live with it.

People who could/would never buy a Bentley complaining about a car that people that could, do. Now criticising the manufacturer for making more of a car that is already outstripping supply, and for putting a more suitable, very new-tech engine in such a car.

Not really a Range Rover is a proper off roader albeit one that's got lots of bells and whistles to cater for the fact most of the buyers won't go off road.They are not the best of lookers but they are beginning to grow on me. However it's a bit like supercar syndrome how often do you see a supercar actually going at supercar speeds, not very often but a big part of the ownership experience is knowing the performance is their.
This is a fancy X5, nothing more, nothing less, this is hardly going to touch their sales
