It's a fat overweight girls car for for fat overweight 2016 girls.

First two words of the entire thread.

"My girlfriend"

If it had started off

"My mate Jim"

I'd like to see one of these take on the Hatfield overpass like my mate Jim did in the 80s

https://www.google.com/maps/@51.745847,-0.224676,3...

Sadly now only used by dogs rather than polytechnic students in a small car for a dare.

Brown Mini clubman, cracking car.

Will have one of these for cheap commuting fun at some point. Went for a Panda 100HP this time though.

Fancy a bog-standard, early Mini One in a solid colour on steels.

What kind of performance figures were you expecting!?

Next time you're out and about take a look at how many 02/03 plate MINIs are still on the road and looking good - its noticeably higher than many many other cars of that era - that has to be some sort of recommendation

A bit more than shed money, £1600.

2006, 117k miles, FSH. Pepper pack inc a/c (albeit non functioning at the moment - regas?)

Importantly it has the Getrag 5-speed rather than the Midlands 'box and is in good condition.

Not perfect but "better than average".

Amazed you managed to insure it for a young chap to learn in. A mate of mine looked at one as a runabout and was quoted double the cost of his GT4 to insure it (admittedly the S).

Bought a 2004 Mini Cooper S as a run around for three days a week to keep the mileage down on my other car. 140k on the clock when I got it for £900, another £500 spend on it the next day and nothing since. Yesterday it had it's MOT at 145k and not a single advisory.

Great car, looks good enough, holds it's own performance-wise and does the commute for me in comfort (I'm 6' 3").

It's a ONE, not a Cooper.

£450 pa to insure as a learner, then £1100 once he passes his test (with a black box fitted).

Less than a 1.2 Corsa or Fiesta equivalent.

Plus I have a soft spot for them, I had an R53 MCS and an R52 MCS convertible, so it's like being home again.

I've also wangled first dibs on it when he comes to sell, then it'll be chipped the 130 bhp and become my runaround :-)

Must admit, for a grand its likely to be borked.

As said, we got ours in January for £2000 and even at that price in January there were some absolute horrors we looked at. Off the top of my head there were a few knocking about for £1500 which we never bothered looking at because of the mileage, lack of service history, because it looked grotty in the pics. For a grand my expectations would be very low and anything other than a car that stop and goes would be a bonus.

Remember that crossing well - also remember the footbridge before that one was built (went to Hatfield school in the 80s)

Bought 2 Cooper S models for SWMBO (ok, actually to make some £££ on), she hated them both, and wondering where the alleged bhp had gone (I had one tuned and the rolling rout ad suggested that the standard horses where there, pre-remap)
I always refer to them as Victoria Beckham cars, a triumph of style over substance, and also as an 'inverse-TARDIS'; one can only speculate how a car of its size has such poor packaging inside. Indeed, if SWMBO ever saw fit to be seen in public with me and our two God-forbids, they always complained about the lack of rear seat spqce.
My step daughter had a Cooper and the build quality was absolutely shocking; I personally fail to see how such cheap and wobbly plastics ever made it past BMWs quality team. To be fair, I did like the handling but otherwise they have all the attraction to me of a third-hand dirty jockstrap (this from a man who's 2nd car is a 248k Audi A4 1.8T Quattro sport.....)

We bought one with 180k for a grand. It's been perfect although it did have a huge pile of recipts.

205k now, did fail last mot on a bush I'm highly dubious they said visible damage anyway, thing is like a go cart love it.

I'm currently a proud owner of a 232,000 mile John Cooper works with full Sparco Milano interior.
Sixteen years old too. Same gear box, new power steering unit. Replacement of a few of bits, other than that
all ok. It's one of the best cars I've owned.

Oh and yes it pulls like a train. Show car and daily driven. It was recently featured in MINI magazine.
Apologies for no photos, you'll just have to take my word for it.

Looking forward to the next 200,000 smile

With respect that was pretty quick for a car circa 15 year old.

i have bought and sold a few of these ,the cooper is one of the slowest cars i have ever driven it makes a mondeo 1,8 diesel feel like a sports car. lots of these minis around for a grand i would not touch this one once its got to 200k on it it will be worth £500 no one will want it,also lots of problems with using a lot of engine oil, gearbox problems, pas steering faults, and the clutch

Great cars!

OH bought an R53 Mini One in 2003, got invited to the R56 launch in 2006 and ordered a Cooper on the day!

Shed needs to check history a bit more carefully - Coopers never got forced induction until the latest 3 cylinder model. R53 and R56 Cooper S had a supercharger but I think the current Coopers and Cooper Ss have a turbo.

Plus the R53 Cooper only ever had a 5 speed gearbox (which is a BIG potential problem) - the 06 plate R53 Cooper I found last year for my sister is a 5-speed.

But they do drive really well, and despite mega-miles the one featured must be more fun than any Fiesta/Corsa/etc. (while it works)!

Pedant mode ON

R50 - Mk1 ONE & Cooper
R53 - Mk1 Cooper S
R52 - Mk1 Convertible

R50 used 5-speed gearbox, Midlands type from launch upto 2004 face lift, then Getrag 5-speed until production ended.

R53 used 6-speed Getrag unit from launch until production ended.

Pendant mode OFF

I remember when the mini cameo out, you could run one for nearly 2 years and not lose a penny in value.

Now they just dont look as good and very tinny inside but great handling.
