Ok, not one for video games section, question is, how much have computer and video games influenced your actual car choices, driving or any other aspect of your motoring career.

I mentioned Porsche Challenge on the PS1 and JT Smith said it was why he is a car designer, now that is a pretty big influence !

I drove my Fiat Coupe turbo in GT before I ever owned the real one,

The GT games opened my eyes to all the weird and wonderful Japanese Domestic Market stuff we know about now, but was an alien world back in the 90s to most of us.

Am sure you have loads

Id say they did. One of the reasons I got a Supra TT is because of GT2&3. I remember the power being rated at 326hp instead of 276 so it meant it must be faster than all the others!

Gran Turismo is the biggest influence for me. Especially the Japanese cars, at a time when a had my uncle importing cars from Japan, was bliss for an 11 year old.

Unfortunately my wallet hasn't allowed me to quite experience some of these childhood memories.

The Gran Turismo series led to me buying a Nissan 200SX in 2004 which I had for a few years (with some mods). Theres still a jap car meet by the stadium I live near in Reading so I still get to see some GT type cars from time to time, reminding me of those days..

Zero influence, I do not play video games regularly. My car choices are based on real-life reasons.

Gran turismo 1 & 2 are pretty much the whole reason I got into cars...and the reason I have always wanted a Micra Super turbo hehe

I haven't owned anything Japanese yet though.

Gran Turismo 1 & 2 and Colin McRae Rally definitely had an influence on me buying an new Impreza Turbo back in 99. Couldn't afford an STi so went for a UK car with PPP instead. Ridiculously quick and capable but realized fairly quickly that it's appeal was quite narrow unless you were up it all the time. Not sure now how I kept my license and health looking back now. smile

Either that or perhaps Transformers?

Grand Turismo definitely helped in the early days, before I saw the light and switched to Forza.

It certainly helped in making the Supra, Skyline, RX7 etc iconic amongst those of a certain age.

My driving style was more influenced by Grand Theft Auto biggrin

Yes defiantly Gran Turismo was a big influence for me and also Toca Race Driver - Ended up buying an MG ZS 180 from this, racing them on the BTCC championship on this game! laugh

Played a lot of Need for Speed Underground years ago, that and watching F&F almost ended up with my Mk1 Focus getting the a full makeover...

Planned to lower, new alloys, full bodykit, window tints, exhaust, air filter, etc... I wanted it all done at once, but thankfully never had the money...

I think I'm also part of the original Gran Turismo generation.

I don't think it really influenced my choice of cars, but definitely my style of driving. I try to follow a smooth line (whilst staying within my lane where necessary) so that I can drive relatively swiftly (not necessarily fast per se) around a turn/bend/S without my passengers ever feeling like I am going as quickly as I am.

Even when Karting with friends I'm usually always the fastest around the track, probably thanks to the understanding of weight balance/racing lines I gained from GT.

Weird, I was just thinking about this the other day too.

Whatever game it was on the PS1 where the exhausts popped and banged with a little flame coming out? Now I can only buy cars that have been contrived to make the same noise and preferably de-catted. All cars should pop and bang.

I think the first game I had on the PS1 was Porsche Challenge. Great game, but for me it was Gran Turismo that had the bigger influence:

Camaro is my wife's choice, I prefer the Mustangs. Next car will be a GT500.

That's pretty cool to think it actually got people thinking about driving in real life, but i guess GT Academy is evidence of that!

I am certainly one of the Gran Turismo Generation. Just check my username - Gran Turismo opened up my eyes to the world of JDM and i'd love to add the collection eventually.

The other week i got a ride in a NSX-R and also snooped around a Nismo 400R. For most people, these cars are nothing special, but for me they are way more 'important' than any Ferrari or Porsche!

Just bear in mind the popularity and cost of collectable Porsches (GT3s etc.). They've made 1,000s of GT3s and yet only 44 400Rs. 44!

One day I will own a Bayside Blue R34. One day. I hold Gran Turismo fully responsible.

I blame Colin McRae series for my spat of not one but 2 Subaru turbos (3 if you count the one I owned half of with my cousin as a stripped rally car when we where younger). Both have been by far the worst cars I have ever owned biggrin. Never meet your heros I suppose.

Hmm, I have a Mercedes CLS, must actually have been all that time playing "PGA Tour Golf" on my PC in the 90s that influenced that one biggrin
