Suziki Swift might be worth looking at, it is marginally more fun to drive than most economical cars.

+1, everything that battered has posted on the illusion of economy.

As the others have said, you will lose more buying a car than keeping the MR2 IMO. Also if your commute is shortish then you won't get near 50mpg. I have an MX5 and a 320d. I alternate them to do my 12 mile commute (so they both get used regularly until we need the two cars next year. It's complex.) and on fuel use it is not massively different. Once the BMW gets warmed up it is much better, but it takes over half my journey to get warmed up.

I learned to ride on a Honda CG125. Was dull as dishwater even when I was a learner, but by Christ it was parsimonious when it came to filling up!
The CG125 is a bike that gets better when you have been riding for a while. Once you have the confidence you can start to ride it like you stole it then it's a giggle.

Yep I'm just gonna get a bike. I want a full bike licence at some point in my life so I may as well get 2 years done now and save some money.

Just gonna get a cheapish YBR and ride that around.

My MR2 is a '92 model so I'll be able to get it on a limited miles classic policy to save some ££.

I love bikes but I'd go nuts on a 125. I spent a year commuting on my CG125, riding in some dreadful weather. I keenly remember the nice days, riding past queues of traffic stuck in roadworks on the way home from work in the blazing sunshine. Despite producing 10bhp from 125cc and being absolutely indestructible, the engine returned 120mpg without fail. Now having a full bike licence, I wouldn't commute on a 125 again. I need a fairing and screen, at least!

I have a Z4 E89 3.0i and a hayabusa 1300 but commute (10 miles a day) on my 250cc Piaggio scooter in all weathers all year except snow. Costs me £15-£20 a month on fuel.

This. I was spending £250 to £280 a month on fuel.

Now I spend £20 a month on leccy.

My Leaf will be FREE in another three years. Lease deals could be even better. (i.e. over a two years lease the car could be very, very inexpensive to commute in).

Then have a gas guzzler for fun.

How far is your commute?

What type of roads?

Do you have to carry anything?

Could you use a bicycle?

How short is a short commute that uses nearly three grands worth of fuel, ok that included the tax but even so, I run a V8 5.5 Merc on my short commute, I put, generally, one tank a month in it, I do work from home sometimes and cycle in a bit, but even if I didnt I still couldnt spend that much eacily.

If you want super cheap, get a Citroen C1 or some other tiny thing, 45 to 50 mpg and will go forever, older, cheaper diesels save money until the next big bill, with something like a C1, kill the engine, (unlikely) just get another one for £250 off Ebay and fit it, it wont be much fun though.

The C107go is far more fun than it has any right to be - and, tbh, I can't imagine how badly you'd need to thrape it to only get 45mpg. Still, one for £250 would be UTTERLY shagged - most of the handful (just) under a grand on Autotrader are categorised.

About 16 mile each way but then I also factored in everything else. I spend on average £50 a week.

A mile or some of broads and an a road but never got caught in any traffic.

Don't carry anything other than the usual.

I wouldn't ever ride a bicycle on the road I don't think they're fast enough to be safe around countryside roads

I'm not talking about supersports motorcycles but even a 34bhp commuter bike will be good enough on country roads give really good fuel economy.

Citroen ZX 1.9td, then keep an eye on Asda for £3.50 for 5l deals on veg! £20 a month tax, cheap insurance, MOT shouldn't be much every year, £24ish for a rainsport 3 tyre etc

Snotter that to work and back, it won't mind the short journeys too much because it's not modern.

That looks like a lot of fun. What is it, about 250?
As you say, 34bhp is enough. Good for about 100mph flat out, which is fast enough for most people, most of the time. Fast enough to land you in court, too.

I can understand people not wanting to use a bicycle on UK roads. I do, it's not ideal. There is a big educational job to do on UK drivers before they learn to treat bicycle users as other than second class citizens.

I think that's a 370 linked but I'm not sure.

The major gripe I have with (push) bikes is that if somebody goes around a corner with low/no visibility at 60+ there's no time to stop for somebody on a bike if they're going dead slow.

Same issue with horses. They're not safe on today's roads.

What sort of MR2 are you running? I commute 50 miles each way in my Mk3 and I'm getting 35-40mpg without trying.

80 miles for 50 quid sounds appalling.
