People who are coming past then slow down next to you so you can't pass the slower car you're approaching.

On that first point, has anyone else noticed that people who do this often do it when there is nobody behind you? confused You can have a completely empty road except you and the person waiting to pull out, and for some reason they find it necessary to pull out right in front of you making you brake! Then you have to follow them at their bizarrely chosen speed (usually 42mph), until you reach a 30mph limit, at which point they normally sail on regardless at 42mph....

People turning left who, just before they make the turn, swing out about a foot into the right lane as if they are driving an 18-wheeler or something.

It seems like the majority of drivers do this, even if they're driving nothing larger than a Polo or a Focus.

Seriously, what's the point?
This yanks my chain as well! People also swing left before making right hand turns. I think it is because a lot of people just cannot comprehend that the point of rotation on their car is the rear wheels, not the fronts, and they somehow think they are helping the car make the turn.
You do realise that not only does it afford you a better view, earlier in the turn, than you would otherwise have, but also gets the car straighter and therefore there's a bit more space to play with on the inside of the corner?
The added advantage is that the car next to you thinks they're going to be sideswiped and the driver almost has a heart attack.
I really don't think the mouth breathers who do this are contemplating the better view, it's just bad driving.
Pft, they're really just performing a Scandinavian flick so they can drift around the junction rally style driving
Scania-Van flick (pretending they are lowing a long trailer) is probably a more accurate term. laugh

I personally only find it a bit annoying, if they come across the white line into my opposing lane just as im a second away (extra WTF!! points if they aren't indicating left at the time).

Yes, Its as though they have a phobia about any traffic being ahead of them.

^ Which could also explain a few other psycho 'issues' like not allowing overtakes, not merging, and middle lane hogging.

Standard behaviour over here in Jersey! We have one length of dual carriageway, which is meant to function broadly as you expect but with a limit of 40mph. There are three points on the eastbound DC where traffic can enter or leave aside from at either end - the polite thing to do is get out of the bloody way if you can, right? Not for these idiots - fast lane changes with no indication to block you overtaking or changing to 'the fast lane', I've even been brake-tested by them for daring to be in 'their' lane! Although this behaviour has calmed slightly since I got a Saab 9-5 - almost as if I deserve to be there now, in their tiny minds rolleyes

If you drive a van this happens lots. People assume a van will be driving slowly and so want to get out before you in case you hold them up.
They should know by now that modern vans have two speeds, flat out and flat out.
They then wonder why the mirror is full of van radiator

Yep, agreed, I don't think the people who do it are intelligent enough to think about sight lines. And as for getting the car straighter - nope, many of the peopl,e I see do it still manage to get their back wheel to ride over the kerb.

People who block yellow boxes. They're so crap at reading the road ahead ( even if in a slow moving queue) that they just mindlessly follow the vehicle in front and end up blocking the box/junction.
tts!
People who change lanes in a box junction so while you'd perfectly judged your approach and the available space on the other side you're now left blocking it. And the other car will inevitably not get caught on the camera.
Ah yes that one. Can't resist that nice space on the other side of the box can they?
I have often wondered what would happen if you enter the box intending to turn right, oncoming traffic turns left, when their lights go red, you can't make the turn because the initial clear road to your right is backed up with stationary traffic.

Anyway box junctions are my pet hate, in Aberdeen drivers seem to have no absolutely idea how they work, they tend to sit on the white line and don't get onto the box.

People who drive around wearing headphones. Especially in newer cars. WTF are you doing? Use bluetooth streaming, or at the very least plug an aux cable in. You're as bad, if not worse, than headphone wearing cyclists (aka "donors")

People who don't know what this road marking means, and flash me when I use it correctly:

The Highway Code said:
Rule 128

Double white lines where the line nearest to you is broken. This means you may cross the lines to overtake if it is safe, provided you can complete the manoeuvre before reaching a solid white line on your side. White direction arrows on the road indicate that you need to get back onto your side of the road.

Aren't they just using hands free with their mobile phone? For occasional users like me, this is the preferred choice over anything fancier and more expensive (and often not a good experience for the person you're talking to).

People not understanding:

  • Hash markings with broken white line
  • Hash markings with solid white line
Particularly the latter. People approaching Spittles roundabout from Huntingdon treat the latter as just another piece of tarmac to use.

I had a friend years ago who got sick of this behaviour and rammed the old bid in front. He pushed her 30 yards down the road until her car spun out of the way. There were witnesses and he narrowly escaped jailtime. Cost him his job. Kudos.

Maybe, but I've noticed an increasing number of folk (generally also wearing beanies) with over the ear "beat's by Dr Dre" type headphones driving about confused

People who give way to oncoming traffic turning accross them when the traffic lights turn green.

This drives me mad in rush hour. Near where I live there is a large traffic light controlled roundabout. As you approch the round about there is a left turn, it's clearly marked as "Keep Clear" and this is observed. In rush hour vehicles are backed up for a long way from this roundabout, and the lights don't stay green for long. The exits from the roundabout are generally free moving, so once you are past the roundabout you are away party

When the lights are red it is easy for oncoming traffic to turn right as traffic queeing always leave a gap for the t junction. Whe the lights go green however, some people insist on stopping and letting oncoming traffic turn across in front of them, massively limiting the number of cars that can get through the green light, compounding the tailbacks banghead

People inching over the white line at a set of traffic lights. Lights turn red and said car stops behind the line. Whilst the lights are still red, said car keeps creeping forwards such that half and in some cases the entirety of the car ends up past the white line before the lights have even turned green. Really, how much time does that small advantage shave off your journey?

Van drivers who are incapable of sitting still at a set of traffic lights. Constantly rolling backwards and forwards on a slight incline at a set of lights. What is the point? Wears out the clutch and causes unnecessary pollution.

Bikers who insist on blipping the throttle whilst stationary. It would appear that a lot of bikes have a idle stalling issue - a national epidemic it would seem.

Selfish air pump users. They can see that you are quite obviously queuing to use the pump after them. Instead they nonchalantly pop into the shop to then do what appears to be their weekly shopping when there are plenty of free shopping bays available.

I was reminded of another one today.

Slow people who change lanes to have a "front row" start on the TL GP. Especially round here with the 40mph dual carriageways that aren't very crowded.

I totally understand wanting to start from pole and beating everyone off the lights. wink

What I don't get is people who change lanes and then drive *slower* than the lane they changed out of. I mean WTF?
