More generally, I think I'd really struggle to find enjoyment from driving if I was doing 25k+ miles for work (I take public transport). Surely with spending multiple hours of every single workday behind the wheel, the last thing you'd want to do is also spend your free time there?
There's driving and then there's driving.

Driving back and forth on the motorway in my diesel hatchback is not comparable to a good thrash up and down the mountains in the MX5. It's like comparing walking to work on the street and going for a hike in the mountains.

Staffordshire has the Elan Valley to the West over the border and north Wales not too far away.

Very empty roads on Friday morning for me. Early starts on a weekend or day off is the only way I use my weekend car, with the exeption of a country pub or farm shop drive/bumbling along the lanes.

From Friday morning in north Wales:

Very worth it IMHO!
Sold. Now just need to get the car and join the club.

I try to pencil in a morning run every couple of weeks for a Saturday or Sunday morning so I am back home for lunch, then it’s a weather watching game until the night before. I enjoy the planning of a trip out too, looking for new roads using Google Street-view or combining known roads into a loop, even finding a new place to eat or grab a coffee.

It can be frustrating if a planned trip gets rained off mind (I don’t tend to use the Lotus in the wet), but scensoredt happens… especially if your default driving location is North Wales!

I totally understand people not wanting to drive a boring daily and wait a week or two to use a performance car. But running a weekend car for no other reason to drive on empty scenic roads, away from daily life, that It all makes sense… to me anyway! driving

Get up a bit earlier. I have a 140 mile route, mainly B roads, which has me back home by 8am with a really silly grin on my face. Also, Saturday is the best day for hooning as every f*cker is out on a Sunday.

OP, a suggestion

Hire a Caterham for a weekend.
Get up early (really early) on Saturday or Sunday.
Wake up your son and wedge him into the passenger seat.
Drive into Mid Wales, do some mountain roads, and don't stop until you need fuel / breakfast.

Then ask your son if it is worth it.
