Automobile Magazine, a US online publication, pits Audi's impending TT RS against the new 718 Cayman S.

Head to head is much as expected, really.
The TT RS has a monster engine with a glorious soundtrack. The 718's by comparison is raspier and more esoteric in its aural pleasantries.
The delivery of same down a straight road is blisteringly quick in the TT RS, with a mind-boggling 0-60 sprint in 3.5s, over a half-second quicker than the 718 S.

Interior of the Audi is, as always seems to the case, superior to its peers - a very nice place to be indeed. The 718 S, by the token of the reviewer, " ... is a hodgepodge of random push, turn, and touch commands. Some of the submenus ... are awkward to access, the main dials including the digital speedometer are too small, and the center stack is cluttered."

A to B, the 718 S is predictably the more dynamically engaging, immersive and pleasing to drive.
"What sets these two cars apart philosophically is one simple fact: The Porsche is a sports car, the Audi is a very sporty car.
... I give [the TT RS] only 7.5 points on the total immersion scale, where the Cayman scores a solid 10."

Head to head is summarised as; "On paper, these two contenders have a lot in common. On the road, however, they display quite different strengths and weaknesses. The TT RS wears a flashy, aggressive outfit, but it delivers when pushed, and its dynamic potential is remarkably accessible. The 718 Cayman S is a more complete car than last year’s GTS, and it ticks all the critical boxes, moving one more step closer to the 911. Despite the paradigm shift toward the turbocharged flat-four engine, it still is the more emotional choice, the more engaging drive, and the sole proper sports car."

A GTS owner I see.

To be fair to the reviewer, it takes a lot more than the engine to 'complete' a car.

The TT will never be the "more complete" car until it stops sourcing it's platform from a FWD family hatchback. Haldex will always hold it back.

Now if they made it full time RWD and only AWD when the rears lost traction...

Well that's a technical impossibility with the current architecture.

I like Porsche, but I don't like that Porsche. The Audi looks better imo...

0-60 in 3.5 secs is crazy; what is the R8!?

Edit: Just looked it up, apparently 3.6 secs. So the TT RS is faster than the R8. Why the R8 exist? Weird.

Because 0-60 time isn't everything?

Or indeed anything, really.

True, but you wouldn't catch Porsche making their Cayman/Boxster out perform their halo 911.

'Outperform'? laugh

No TT outperforms an R8. There's no comparison.

I'm not an Audi fan at all but the TT in the pics makes the Porsche look a bit yesteryear to me.

How about comparing 0-60 times, as above?

Absolutely, but which one will look better in 10 years time?

It's all a bit academic, as Audi aren't taking any orders for them this year.

Only cars available will be ex-dealer, pre-reg or demos with weird specs.

I'm not a Porsche fan, but the TT just looks bulky and shouty, more of a steroidal gym obsessive than an athlete like the Cayman.

That'd work. And it may actually be a neat solution.

0-60 is the silliest "performance measure" out there,
