I've never understood the point of these concept cars. They never get anywhere close to production, not even in a much less dramatic form.

Its basically saying if we had balls this is what we would aim for, but we don't have balls so here is the new Modus.
It is somewhat the automotive equivalent of the bloke in the pub who desperately tries to tell everyone he once shagged a fit bird but everyone knows he'll soon be heading home to shag something that looks and smells like a wheelie-bin. Again.

When it comes to MOT time many Renaults could be described as pretty, hate machines

That Looks Fanatastic!

I love french concepts!

This is almost as good as the 2008 GT by Citroen.

That is an incredible looking car I must admit, it appeals to the 80s child in me with all the clear red glass/plastic and the overall shape seems slightly retro but futuristic.

Sadly, as already said I doubt we'll see anything like this hit the road in reality.

Oh and even as a life long Renault(Sport) fan, that flower thing is such a heap of b*llocks.

There's very little by way of originality in the responses to this concept.

"ooh they'll never make it..." no they won't, but more importantly everyone realises that....
"..it reminds me of x and y, nothing original here..".. what a load of tired, clichéd, 'me first', BS.....Everyone realises that every car has aspects of others in it's look...starting for the most part with 4 wheels, 4 wheel arches, a windscreen, headlights, rear lights.... that a low slung sports car looks a little like that other low slung sports car is not a revelation.

Concept cars.... perhaps some should look up the meaning of 'concept'?

It's free reign to an artist to express their idea of what a specific car type could and should look like....inside and out...it allows the designers of the real thing to push boundaries stylistically and technically.
Lots of things seen in sci-fi movies, as weird ideas and concepts, are coming to be. The same is true of cars.
France do a concept better than most.
Most other countries/marques dress up production ready stuff, and then reap the glowing press when the car in the showroom is 'so close' to the concept...

That France express more artistic and flamboyant flair should be celebrated. After all we're fast approaching the situation where limited edition cars are being bought, not driven and then sold on for stupid suns to be not driven somewhere else... a recent F40 for sale has but 1500 miles on it. In that realm, it doesn't matter whether it makes production or not, as long as it sits in someone's lounge...

This Renault is stunning.

It is a stunning looking thing, much like that Citroen one a couple of years ago, and I certainly agree about letting the designers off the leash.

But, surely that has to be balanced by the fact that PSA don't produce sports/GT cars so this is merely just the design department's wet dream in the clay. It's hardly going to effect the design of the next Clio other than headlights/tailights/grille. If Porsche or Merc or Lamborghini put this out you could reasonably look at it and work out what a production version might be. And they really do stuff all technically, you can put whatever you want in a press release when your car can at best crawl on to a motor show stage, if that.

How is this any different from the Maserati Birdcage from 11 years ago but without the V12?

The way it looks inside, the way it looks inside, the powertrain and the 'idea/reason/brief' behind it.

Might be easier to ask "How is this similar..."
A: It's low, wide, has a clam shell canopy and won't see production...
