This is turning into the new 335(mapped) thread.

They're diesels, they smell, sound feckin 'orrible and are bolted into salty rep mobiles, taxis, buses, etc. But worst, worst of all is that every owner seems to wants to tell you at every opportunity how fast they are. These and Tesla drivers are so tediously boring. I'm glad you like your choices, and good for you, but please make this nonsense stop.

Thanks.

By the way, how good is it on diesel whilst using 313.2HP biggrin

Oh dear where to start, your opinions on diesels seem to be 20 years behind.
My A6 estate has 300hp 0-60 in 5 seconds and 163mph all from a 3 litre Turbo diesel.they don't smell any different or throw out visible fumes.
It has 7 speed paddle shift, sport mode (never needed) luxury interior 20 inch alloys etc. You can even control the exhaust volume on the twin sportline exhausts in the computer under settings/exhaust/volume control.
All in all a lovely car that is more than a match for most others.
Oh and i do like cars i used to own a cerbera which also made a bloody great noise.
A great car for business but not exactly exciting?

When you say 'more than a match' I'm sure it's the toast of the motorway service stations but let's be serious, active exhausts, sorry 'twin sportline exhausts' rofl on an oil burner?

You did have an epic car but don't mention those two in the same context again. One is a gloriously fun car and the other a very nice taxi.

As the process of liberating energy from diesel is more efficient than petrol, more mpg than a in identically powerful petrol engine given the same use and conditions.

Diesels aren't as fast as they feel - it's all smoke and mirrors and torque (and more smoke. And some soot). I had a 3.0 v6 twin turbo XF diesel which felt like a rocket ship as you barely had to do anything to make it fly - certainly it would have killed that diesel golf. But anyone in a gti/ST who could be bothered to stir some ratios would have stayed with me easy. S4 would have outrun it fairly easily I'm sure.

Good answer to a stupid question.

I don't know, not having stopped to ask anyone their peak torque figures....not that peak torque is all important anyway.

The good thing is when you have over 300bhp the 500lbft of torque is just a cherry on top. smile

It's probably putting out well over 350hp eek

How is the gearbox and engine coping with the extra torque?
It needed a new one as it turned out, but the gb-specialist was sure it was down to milage rather than power output.

He never had the car on a dyno, but he reckons it's just as fast as his e39 M5 up to 125 mph.

I owned the cerbera as an only car from november to july and as a complete nutter i can say it was a lot of (scary) fun in bad weatherhehe but no way in hell could it keep up with the 4 wheel drive Audi in the wet or snow or ice. oh and the performance figures are better than those of all the standard 911's apart from the 4s the gt3rs and the turbo. Oh and the bi turbo has 30hp more.tongue out
I still fancy a secondhand 911 or M6 next but I will be keeping the A6 for the rottwieler and in a few years time if prices nosedive i would love the Audi RS7( 703hp)biggrin

With the cruise control set at 80mph i get 43.5mpg, around 25mpg around town in flappy paddle mode, never put it in sport because i pay for the dieselhehe

Not THAT vastly better than my petrol auto 9-5! Calculated MPG over 900 miles of mainly motorway and fast A-road last week of 33mpg (could probably do a little better, really), hovers around 20-22mpg around the doors in D. That's with a stage 1 map to 275bhp/310lb/ft-ish.

So you don't put it in sport for wanting to save 2 mpg?

They way you drive makes a huge difference to MPG, maybe one of you has a heavier foot than the other.

eh? the derv is using a full third less fuel, and it's pulling along a bigger, faster car?

Diesels can be, and are, as good as petrol cars. Some like torque, some like NA engines, some like turbos, some like linear power delivery etc. Point it, people have fast cars that they buy because they like - stop trying to compete with each other! Diesels can be great handling and fun to drive cars too, so just stop! This is turning into the Hilary vs Trump debate...

Diesels can be extremely capable cars. Our SUV is faster than most reasonable cars you can find on the roads - the reality is that most of our population aren't really into fast cars/don't want one/don't know what 'fast' means. 7 seconds to 60 is light-speed in some peoples eyes, but in the end its what the owner wanted. It really doesn't matter as to what people think about your car - you are the one who chose it in the end.

I imagine this post would have very different responses if the title was 'why do these gas-guzzling petrols have to be so damn fast?!?!?!?!?!?'

Get a grip! This is pistonheads!

Granted, but the way some people (not saying Merc450 is, btw) talk about fast diesels you'd think they basically put fuel back in the pump whilst doing 240mph everywhere! Just a bit surprised that the difference isn't that enormous smile

2mpg? My friendly Audi rep that sold me the TT the A4 the A5 cab and the A6 says I will be lucky to get 20mpg in sport mode as it changes up at the redline 4250rpm? Absolutely no need as it is a torque monster and does its best acceleration up to 3500rpm
