Why do these dirty Diesels have to be so damn fast??

535D's still have that mystique, a chap in the pub was drunkenly telling me how my 388 bhp Mercedes CLS would be "Destroyed" by his mates 535D, I just agreed as he is an aggressive perma pissed dhead and was basically just wanting piss on my bonfire, not remotely bothered either way to be honest but I looked at its just over 100 bhp down on mine.
Would a 535D out accelerate mine ?
Not unless it was tuned. Even then it wouldn't "destroy" your car unless it was physically crashed into it.Would a 535D out accelerate mine ?
Yeah the 535D is pretty quick. But then, with not far off 300bhp as standard, why is this a surprise to anyone?

Not a lot in it though. Having lots of torque and an extra gear easily makes up a 75hp advantage.
OP, i believe what occurred, to paraphrase an existing well know saying is "Objects in the rear mirrors can appear faster than they are"!
What i mean is that it is difficult to judge speed / distance in your mirrors, just because a car behind you is accelerating more slowly doesn't make it disappear from sight immediately. (a corollary also exists the "damm i can't keep up with the car ahead i can see through my windscreen" effect ;-)
For example, lets take a REALLY quick car, say 0-60 in 4sec and 0-100 in 10sec, vs a slow one,0-60 in 10sec and 0-100 in 25 sec.
Because acceleration vs time is NOT linear (as drag increases with the square of velocity) When the fast car hits 60, the "slow one" will be doing something like 44 mph, just 15mm less, and 7.5mph for 4 sec is only 13m or a couple of car lengths, and when the fast car hits 100m the slow one will be doing around 70mph and be just 60 oddm further behind. So, yes, you'll still see them clearly in your rear view mirror. In fact, the best way to make your SLOW car seem much faster than it actually is, is to start accelerating earlier. I find i can easily "keep up with" much much faster cars, generally being driven by people with poor observation and anticipation, by simply making sure i can accelerate a few sec before they do.......

No matter how quick they are... the fact remains that a diesel is a diesel, and this is bad.

329bhp, loads of torque. Same performance as the old six cylinder M5 and 45mpg.
Incredible.
With a remap and a zorst they are insane.
It's got about 309BHP or 313PS and having the same performance as a 26 year old M5 isn't really incredible is it?329bhp, loads of torque. Same performance as the old six cylinder M5 and 45mpg.

And they're not "insane" with a remap, my old F10 M5 with 560hp and 500lb/ft was bloody fast but not insane so a 535d doesn't even come close to being insane.
Why are diesel drivers so prone to hyperbole?

I don't think I've had any trouble shaking any diesel car (including remapped ones) only 280ish bhp and 279ftlb from my turbo petrol as well...soon to be a tad more with a couple of bolt on bits
You will have to hope you never meet a 3.0 BMW then.Even drove the same car (E90 330D remapped auto if you want the specifics) so can confirm it was trying.

New twin turbo 3.0 diesel 5 series goes just as fast as 1989 3.6 litre N/A petrol 5 series. Shocker.

This. You need a huge performance delta to make any obvious difference on the road in a normal 'pull'. What i mean is that it is difficult to judge speed / distance in your mirrors, just because a car behind you is accelerating more slowly doesn't make it disappear from sight immediately. Not saying you have to.
I'm also not saying i'd fully get away from the aforementioned 330D, just that it'd not get past
In the interests of fairness, and as an ex owner of an E90 330D which was remapped, I don't have much difficulty believing that a 280bhp old Saab would be there or there abouts in a hypothetical drag race.I'm also not saying i'd fully get away from the aforementioned 330D, just that it'd not get past
I've had a Saab, a 9-3 Aero HOT, which was dynamically the worst car I've ever owned, shockingly st in some areas, but they can be made to go fast in a straight line.
