Why do these dirty Diesels have to be so damn fast??

So yes, a diesel does feel faster on the road because its not natural to drive around at high revs sitting just under the power band at 4-5krpm in a petrol car. A diesel is always closer to its peak power/torque at any given engine speed.
Damn my FN2 civic type r must be very unnatural then. It's rarely below 4k rpm and when it is it doesn't like it one bit!xjay1337 said:
As I said mate, I'm on the 10.10 session.
Feel free to join me. All in the spirit of good banter. And what's better than a bacon roll?
I built my car to do track work if your automatic cruising machine can avoid cooking it's brakes within the first 3 laps I would be impressed.
:Oi Jay I won't tell you again no slagging off the three pointed stars AMG products on my watch you & your Clan of Tartan interiors need to know your place Feel free to join me. All in the spirit of good banter. And what's better than a bacon roll?

By the way you're wrong about the brakes they'll eat up the track work these aren't VW brakes you know!!
Don't underestimate the Merc 400lb ft of torque is not to be sniffed at, it's the way in which the engine is relentless with its distribution of power & torque I can only comment on my CLK55 which could put lengths into my old 360bhp GGR tuned Focus ST on the track, acceleration out of the corners was a real killer blow the suspension makes a massive difference from standard (the Quaife diff is a big help) along with the Weistec software in the gearbox all add up to the Focus just losing out by 2-3 car lenghts per lap at Brands GP circuit.
I'd say Silverstone if it's the GP circuit would swing things the C55's way but it'd be fun to watch.

My money is on the Merc...
Would my old 286hp 335d be similar in a straight line to a 260hp Scirocco?
If it is, then my old really heavy 367hp 550i was quite a bit quicker than that everywhere.
The C55 being more powerful and lighter than the 550i should make it substantially quicker than the Scirocco, in a straight line at least.

For track work, "torque" is irrelevant, because both cars have a gearbox fitted.
All that matters is the following:
1) Power to weight ratio
and
2) The ability to apply drive and inertial forces to the ground (ie traction and grip (lat/long)
The power to weight ratio favours the Merc, but not by as much as you might think (230bhp/tonne vs 190bhp/tonne) but i bet the 'rocco is a LOT better into, round, and out of the corners! Watching that vid of the Merc at Oulton Park, it really struggles to brake effectively and then get into the apexes.
if i were a "race" with both cars on track, the rocco wouldn't be able to get past on the straights, but i suspect it could drive up the inside on the brakes and force the Merc wide, and then, unless it's a long circuit, i think it'd put in an ultimately quicker lap time, imo.

OP, sure it was not a golf Mk1?

I'd put my money on the Merc to win, that engine is a powerhouse and I can't see the Scirocco beating it. However at the end of the day it would likely come down to who is the better driver?
Regardless, IMO both cars look great, I really like the look of the Merc though.
The Scirocco looks very cool in it's own way too and the fact it is a diesel track car is interesting. How boring would the world be if everyone liked the same thing? I just can't see why the Scirocco is getting such negative remarks, especially after reading through xjay1337's thread and seeing how much enthusiasm has went into it. The Scirocco gets a big thumbs up from me.

I ran a Mk2 S-Tronic V6 for 30k over 18 months.
No way on this planet is 30mpg achievable for daily usage.
You can try to kid yourself by resetting the trip computer when fully warmed
up and whilst up to speed an sitting at 55mph, but you'll only be kidding yourself.
The true test it to workout your MPG manually over a full tank.
My average MPG was about 23-24mpg over 30k
They do make a lovely noise though! And unless you're doing big
miles will bring plenty of smiles per gallon

This is PH - you have to get a powerful engine and then drive at a constant 50mph to get (irrelevant) fuel economy figures up high!
Buy a 335d; drive it like a 100bhp diesel; get reasonable fuel efficiency figures; brag down the pub that the car is super fast (in theory) and frugal.
No car is both fast and frugal, at least not at the same time.
To be fair, petrol lovers are guilty of the same nonsense. Plenty of people on the Porsche pages are getting over 30mpg from NA flat 6s, apparently, which must mean never using revs and, in fact, never accelerating.
