The end of cruising at 85 mph on the motorway?

I remember reading about it at the time and people involved were saying they would not have crashed if there had been signs warning them it was foggy and to slow down.
Most people in this country are uncapable of driving a car and as such I dont think speed limits are unreasonable.
That being said there was a trial in the northern territories where they removed speed limits on an open freeway/motorway and accidents went down so there is something to be said for not applying speed limits at all.

Personally I agree totally with caelite, especially about being selective in applying lower limits like 20 etc. I was particularly struck with this when I was in Kansas afew years back. All the limits in/around towns were constantly varying depending on the environment, in a really obvious and understandable way. Same with schools - at certain times (when kids were likely to be around) the limit was lowered, otherwise it was higher, but still lower than the surroundings. Made perfect sense. Likewise I've driven across Europe loads of times and 80 was, strangely enough, perfectly safe.
Saying that, the condition of our roads, with the exception of Belgium, is shocking, but motorways are among the best maintained, so again, why still 70?

I've seen a few go... but there were reduced limits in place at the time. Pretty harsh mind, they got one guy basically on the first gantry saying 60. I drive up and down this section of road at least 3 times a week to get to work, and can tell you if it's flowing and you're doing 85, you may want to stay out of the outside lane as stuff WILL be going faster than you - and I am still yet to see a camera flash.
In fact I'd go as far as to say that between 13 and 11 speeds have actually gone UP since they added the extra lanes and installed cameras.

With reduced limits in place, I stay within 10mph of the posted limit. Otherwise I continue at whatever pace I feel comfortable with. If I get pinged, I'll take the 3pts and be more circumspect in future!AH33 said:

It's not about saving time. It's about driving at a speed that keeps you fully engaged with the task at hand, observant and focused. Yes you SHOULD be fully observant and focused at any speed, but the reality is that human beings just don't work like that. OwenK said:

Now we are so tightly regulated, people seem to get so angry when they loose 1-2 minutes as it cant be made up.
Cross country driving is no fun as your always on the lookout for sneaky 40 limits with cameras on open roads. A blast across wales was always fun, but i bet its a nightmare now.
Can only enjoy a nice progressive drive on local, known roads now.
