Looks like they're aimed at the rear, which gives you time to spot them and slow down?
Do you ever drive in the dark?
You would also need to look at every single sign post you passed and up in the gantries.

All that jazz said:
They do flash. They are known as HADECS3. Mostly enforce temporary speed limit reductions but also known to enforce NSL on the M4 at Bristol (NIP proof was posted on here a while back). Soon to enforce red X closed lane driving too when they can get them to work properly.
Was that on the smart motorway stretch that joins to the M5? They seem to be hit and miss. See people going at 80 through them without a flash while others get pinged, strange.

This looks like a smart motorway to me? Which have speed cameras along them anyway?
But these aren't on gantries, so no accompanying speed limit roundel on display.
Yes but they are still on a smart motorway.

I just make sure I keep it under 80 when I know i'm on a SMART motorway

spotted lots of these on the M25 recently as well. Annoying (although to be fair conditions rarely allow speeds greater than 50).

One question. Do modern speedos still over-read as much as they used to? Only ask is i'm sure 85 in mine is closer to 78-80 in reality?

Quite right, These days you can sit on a runway blocking planes all day with your ridiculous name, smelly dreads and equally sad mates and get away with a 200 quid fine, I don't see why your number plate falling off couldn't be classed as "protest"

Maybe they're only on when the active speed limit is in force.

Thats pretty much the A9 between perth and dunblaine now. Every 2nd van you see is either missing a plate or is mysteriously obscured with st.

Oh dear... Maybe if there were more marked Police cars on the roads looking for and pulling people for actual bad driving etc, rather than cameras purely focused on speed, such naughtiness would be picked up on. But then the revenue would drop. Can't have that.

Or just modify the law so that the majority dont see the need to break it.
Increase the limits for DCs and Motorways (80 would bring us inline with most of the EU, personally Id say fk it and go straight to 90)EDIT: Maybe keeping the DC at 70 and increasing Mway to 80/90* Just thought about the condition of a lot of the countries dual carriageways.
Remove pointless 40 and 50mph restrictions previously NSL roads
Bring B class (<3.5ton) vans in line with cars speed limit wise, the lower limits are archaic and easily circumvented
Remove pointless 20mph limits from towns, reserving them only for schools zones and other areas where they are REALLY needed

If a large portion of the public dont follow the law then the law is wrong not the public.

I think it's time to start borrowing a plate from someone at the opposite end of the country!

You'd be lucky to do 85 mph on the M6, M42, M1 in the daytime anyway!

My Merc speedo over-reads by 2mph, I set the cruise for between 73 and 77mph depending on circumstances. Less to worry about then, just watch the other cars and not play spot-the-camera all the time.

The sign above it is capable of displaying a temporary speed limit. In that event, the camera will enforce that limit, or thereabouts.

As to whether they enforce normal motorway limits, I don't know but I never take the risk. It's the same process as for any smart motorway, it's just that the way the temporary limits are displayed is slightly different.

I once saw, ages ago, a Golf that had been pulled over on the M62, and the BiB where at the back of the Golf, watching as the driver cleaned of his number plate. Back of the Golf was covered in crap but it had been a really a bad couple of days weather wise and he'd probably thought, "Hmm, number plate covered in crap, Oh Dear!"
Only ever seen it once though, and you see plenty of hatchbacks covered in mud, think it's something to do with the vortex they create due to the shape at the back.

Do these work as an average speed camera or a regular speed camera?
Standard speed camera, notice on the M1 near leeds they have now painted them Yellow!

Look out for the numbers painted on the central reservation as an extra giveaway!

As already mentioned, they seem to have a high tolerance, I do indicated 80 leptons through them every day, but I have seen them flash, and I know of people who've had tickets from them so they do work!!

They are a digital speed camera which covers all lanes and don't flash... Not all are on yet and I think they are set at slightly higher threshold or most of the motorway would be nicked!

There are alot sprouting up though.
They do flash. I've seen the HADECS on the M1 and M62 flash several times recently.

Don't be too complacent about what sort of speed they might be set to trigger at. I recently got a NIP for doing 80 in a 70 (A12 dual carriageway), so not a lot of tolerance there.
Yep quite close, but if you were nicked for 80 your speedo was more likely 84+ So in reality you were doing 85 ish in a 70.

I'm not criticising btw, just saying - since I've recently invested in an Aguri skyway following getting done by one of these grrr, although 87 in temp 60 motorway is a fair cop wink. With this though I notice the difference between gps and speedo (yes I know I may be flawed in taking the gps as more accurate, but in all my cars the gps is around 4 mph slower at around 80 to what the car speedo says)

I guess you either look out for them and take the risk, or don't speed...unfortunately!

Which is why i drive according to the conditions and have as yet in all my years driving and what must be nearly three quarters of a million miles mostly in excess of the speed limit on motorways I have never had a ticket.

Standard process on motorways is when on unknown motorway have waze/speed cam app on and keep a look out for gantry cams and these new ones.

At all times on known or unknown look as far ahead as you can to see if you can spot anything on any rises or bridges across the carriageway or lots of cars brakes coming on at the same time on approach to a bridge or going through a bend.

Keep to lane discipline and keep as far left as possible. A natural response for a speed camera operator is going to be to focus on the inside/overtaking/fast lane. The further to the left of it you are the better chance you stand of not being pinged or slowing down before they get a chance to ping you as they will expect the faster moving cars to be in the "fast" lane.

When passing onramps quick mirror glance shoulder check to see if plod are sat up the ramp waiting for someone to whizz on by. (This is a favourite trick on the M11/A14 between Bishops Stortford and Cambridgeshire.

Oh and of course on bridges and even footpaths be aware of foreign objects sticking up over the side of the railings (look for tripods). If there are even spaced pods possibly camera van hidden off to the side.

Unmarked cars. Usually in furthest lane to the left. Keeping to speed limit or thereabouts. New cars. Clean. Normally a little lower at the rear than should be. Look through car to see if there is a camera near the rearview mirror. Unmarked cars are definitely getting harder to spot.

Just a few things t observe when on every motorway journey.
