I'm really really sorry, I do like MX5's (passed lots of them on track ) but when I read this below...
Right, so, er, I'll go now...

I know 50+ others and have met many more at shows who are mechanics, lawyers, builders, policemen, it nerds,
All I could think of was Village People Right, so, er, I'll go now...
The point of the MX5 is to find a nice piece of twisty road and absolutely cane it , and as they're not that powerful you can use all of that power, redlining it at every opportunity, without instantly being in licence-losing territory. They're also low and with the roof down makes it feel faster than it actually is. Mine is a MK1 with the seats de-foamed so you sit a bit lower and are held in place better, a small change but it makes a big difference.
I've also got a Fisher Fury with about 170bhp in 600kgs or so, which is ofc a rocket in comparison, but due to that power driving it becomes more of an exercise in self-restraint or frustration, a second or two at full throttle and you've reached the speed limit, so you have to back off. Enjoyable in short bursts, but ultimately a bit frustrating as you spend more time checking the speedo than just enjoying it.
I'd like the MX5 to have a little bit more power , but not much more as I fear that would ruin it at the point when it's currently at its best. I've considered selling the Fury and adding a turbo or supercharger kit to the MX5 instead, not sure yet but given just how much the MX5 makes me grin every time I drive it, that option appeals more and more than the larger power and faster car.

Had a blast yesterday zipping around banks peninsula, lots of tight twisty roads, overtakes, top down fun all round.
I really dont care about other peoples perceptions.
.that's a nice drive. Did it in a rental SS Bluebird. Looking forward to doing ii in my Integra next year.I really dont care about other peoples perceptions.
Anyhoo, back on topic I really enjoy my 2.0 NC MX-5. Better brakes than my Elan.. ..and handles nearly as well

Unless you are going to track it, I don't get the "it needs more power" thing. You might go a bit faster but won't really have that much more fun on normal back roads.
I ran a standard MK1 MX5 for a year or two and on a clear road it has enough power to be fun.The problem is it doesn't have enough power to get past the average TDi on a country road who is slow on the corners but accelerates on the straights - a supercharger taking it to 180bhp mostly fixed that - mine now has 220+bhp and it's fantastic - TVRs, Monaros etc have come and gone but the MX5 remains.

What is this "self restraint" and "backing off" you speak of? spookly said:

What is this "self restraint" and "backing off" you speak of? Fun in a MX-5 or similar is different but still rewarding.
Some call me arrogant, but I believe I am blessed with having a very low opinion of other people until they prove themselves worthy, so comments just wash over me as I don't respect the commenter.
The thing about people is that most of them are discontent and have never come to anything. It doesn't matter what you buy - if it's slightly out of the norm, there will be negative comments.
If you have an expensive car, a poor man will require to comment that you must have a smaller penis than he does (because that's about the only thing left he can use to equalise himself against someone who has obviously got more money to spend and is unlikely to ever have to prove it)
If you have a powerful car, someone with a boring car will make the same comment as above
If you have a lower powered sports car that's about the handling, someone with a boring car will need to call you a homosexual (because they envy or don't understand your car choice, and are afraid of it the same way they're afraid of being bummed / afraid of the fact that they find another male good looking and can't square that off in their own mind).
The only time I had a negative comment in our MX-5 was in a slow moving traffic queue with the roof down on a hot day. Three topless (maybe naked?) sweaty builder-type men sitting intimately close in a Transit van called me a poofter without even a shred of irony. I blew them a kiss and burst out laughing. They looked like disgusted.

I've driven Mk1 MX5s for 20 years - no one has ever made a negative comment to me - albeit I am a builder and generally quite dirty / scruffy.I had a dispute with a tramp who was on a bike once, he shouted abuse as I parked on my drive - as I jumped out he clearly wasn't expecting a scruffy builder to emerge as he pedaled off as fast as he could.
On here I've had the odd comment about "girl's car" to which I pointed out that I find it an advantage that girls like my car.
If it's hairdressers driving these around my way, then they've long since retired. It is the favoured car of the over 60's down here. Slightly younger and you might have a Boxter or S2000 but, the market for these two seaters definitely seems to be older folk.
It's a car I don't really get, but that's why I don't own one.
