Help with hire car queries

Hi chaps, after help form the collective.
Holiday booked for October half term in Polenca, Majorca for four adults and a five yr old. We're considering renting a car for the week but not sure if it's worth it; would we be better getting a transfer to/from Palma airport and taxi-ing it about or renting a (big) car for the week? How big is Polenca?
If we do hire, does anyone have any advice on maybe who to use, and what to do about excess insurance etc? I know from reading on here that most of you guys who do this sort of thing get your excess insurance in advance over here. What considerations do we need to take if we do book?
Basically I've never hired a car before and don't want to get fleeced.

We have just come back from Majorca (alcudia) we always book a transfer using sun transfers, it' was 174 euros for a return transfer in a Mercedes vito. A taxi is 80 euros each way, we prefer the extra space, if there are 5 of you then you would need either a private transfer or 2 taxis as there are no standard 7 seat taxis.
I did hire a car many years ago and used hertz as it was 35 euros for 3 days, it's gone up now.
Vanrell hire cars with no excess or fuel policies and are based in the car park which does avoid all of the ques. They do one way rentals too. As for getting around, I guess it depends what you want to do. Buses are cheap and run from pollensa to can Picafort, from alcudia to Picafort was 1.55euro.
