I was surprised just how much of a load the Jazz can handle. I loaded up m FiL's junk into his Jazz, puts a lot of estates to shame, clever little folding seats helped.

A lot of these posts are all very well, but why such dull cars and yet be on a motoring enthusiasts forum?

i've played around with some cheapie cars and / or cars that shouldnt depreciate

This past year i've had :-

A 1998 VW Caddy van, fitted with a 2.8 VR6 Golf engine
A track modded but road legal Clio 172
Clio 197
Jag X Type
Mercedes C350 coupe
Mercedes C320 saloon
And current an MG ZT 2.5 V6

And before that various Jag v6 petrols, petrol BMWs, etc.

£500 car buy you something like a Ford Puma 1.7 which are a hoot and with a £1,000 in your pocket, the worlds your lobster.
That's like saying to football fans on a forum why they don't all support Barcelona

My dad's got a 2002 jazz it's brilliant for putting stuff into and never goes wrong. He's had it for 11 years now and will probably outlast him.

£1400 E320 CDi estate here.(2000MY)

190k miles when bought in Feb, use it for dog duties, tip etc etc.

And driving up and down to the Alps all the time. No worries about it sliding into a ditch, car parks etc.

Winter tyres on, 45 mpg at 90, whats not to like?

We have a 13 year old Renault Scenic, paid £1200 for it 3 years ago, 1 owner, 55k miles and full service history.

It has an oil change at each MOT, which so far it has passed with only a corroded brake pipe at the last. We take the seats out and use it for taking all sorts of stuff to the tip, a quick hoover afterwards and it's like a 13 year old car again.

The grandchildren make a mess in it but we don't care, it gets dirty but we don't care, it gets scratched but we don't care, it costs £130 fully comp to insure and we do care.

Equally we would have no hesitation driving it anywhere in the UK without worrying about not getting there, and it averages 39 mpg.

It has had no problems whatsoever and is now on 82k miles and hopefully good for a few more years yet. I hate it because it's French yet love it at the same time. It is very liberating having a car like this.

Everyone should have an old banger in their lives.

Bangers and sheds are normal budget cars. You're mainly on about barges which have their own thread.

For me a shed appeals because of the minimal cost of motoring. A barge costs way more to run MPGwise. If I had a barge on my skinny lane commute I would be as slow as everyone else.

89000 miles, 2.0 petrol a rust bubble on the arch, and flaky paint on the rear bumper. £600 18 months ago.
The boot is like a cave, it's cheap to service, and it's OK on fuel. With me until it dies.

'End-of-life'* cars are so unbelievably cheap in the UK it makes massive sense to run one, compared to continental Europe.

Some top shedding here.

WRT the comment about this being an enthusiast's forum and not for the 'boring' stuff, I love a good mundane shed thread over on Reader's Cars and, going by the comments they accrue, many others feel likewise.

  • by end-of-life I mean 7+years/100k miles

Good bangers, but it's got to be alongside other interesting sports or classic cars.

If not then it's just a poverty stricken or miserly persuit.

Same here bought a 2004 e46 touring 320d ES (as basic as they come) 7 years ago. Bought as a second car and it has matured into a nice shed. Has 182k now as it has been reasonably reliable. It is surprisingly comfortable and I still do 1000 miles a month and I really like it. It's a shed and I have another car but for some reason just like to pile the miles on this one. Hope you tale it to 200k or keep it until it dies.

If the crank seal on my 300 quid avensis hadn't pissed oil everywhere I'd still be driving it now. I loved that car.

Its not in the least like that.

Its like saying you enjoy playing golf but only having a stick as a club.

Theres no reason at all why someone who considers themselves a motoring enthusiast but is spending £500 or £1000 or what cant have an interesting car.

Surely the "Shed of the Week" threads demonstrate that?

I've had a load of interesting metal over the years at shed money. Loads of Jags - X Types, S Types - even the odd XJ, lovely big Mondeo V6 STs, Pumas, Clio RSs, Xsara VTS, MX5s, MGTFs, MR2s....

Why would i chose say a poverty spec 1.0 litre Fiesta over any of those - unless there are other circumstances dictating that. And then of course we're into the realms of "needs must" rather than the "hey, arent i great i drive a shed rather than those silly people who lease a new BMW or an expensive car because you know, i really want to"

I stopped having sheds last year.. I spent $$$ on some of them.

I too had a Jaguar X Type, bargain! Along with
- BMW 330i M Sport (£4000 in February 09)
- Volvo S70 (£400 in August 2006)
- BMW 535i (£4000 in September 2007), came with all sorts of goodies like genuine AC Schnitzer wheels, boot spoiler, Hella facelift lights front and back, gearbox gone so rotting away in my drive
- Saab 93 Turbo (£350 in May 2014) I didnt like it

Etc etc..
Yup. All older cars are a lottery. I've lost money on some, made slightly on others, broke even on some too - the C320 i had i sold there on saturday and got what i paid for it, down to the penny. Likewise some of the cars i have lost significantly money on - the Clio 172 springs to mind - i'd a wail of time with when i owned it, have some great memories and having rescued the car from lying in the back of a sales yard for a year have probably given it a couple of years more life rather than been sold for parts.

Most of those i mentioned arent barges. If i'd £500 to spend in the morning on a car, i'd get a Puma 1.7. Granted the rear arches would probably be shot, but surely better than something dull but worthy?

03 plate Mondeo here, 123k and owned for just over 2 years. About 28k in that time. About £600 spent on last 3 mots. Originally cost £300 plus a dead Saab. I charge 45p a mile, do a few thou every year for work, so it's free motoring. This funds my other shed, a 1999 MX5 that does weekend duties and short trips to work.

The semi shed option is good if you do heavy miles. 30k pa is a long way in any car so getting a newer one with less potential for previous neglect is wise. Also you need to set aside a few quid for maintenance and know when to call a halt. One of mine handed me a clutch 300 miles from home, I should have binned it but needed it so paid £400 for a clutch. 6 months on it was dead. Win some lose some.
