I bought it in December and paid 1600 for it a 84,000. Part service history and was in good nick overall with loads of niggly things.
I did a full service and changed the coil packs. The only mechanical issue I had was the recent clutch pedal issue and its going to tick over 100,000 next week.
Its a great car for the money but fixing all the little issues with this car can add up to the cost of the car its self.
But if you can put up with these then its in a segment of its own at this price range.
6 speed so mway crusing is great, unlike a CTR 182 or fiesta ST as you have lower revs and mpg.
Insurance is also half the cost against some rivals and the later cupra rs.
Interior is big enough for me to fit my 29er in with the wheel off which I value more than chucking a roof rack on.
Old school single din so swap in a Bluetooth unit and the speaker system is pretty decent too.
If you're like me and can't decide on your next car and need to just have a reliable, fairly economical and fun car I'd recommend it.
I have been thinking about getting rid of it when the MOT is due in December but any alternative will result in a drop in economy, reliability and space.
On the water issue.. It took me an afternoon and some butol to fix. Super easy and didn't effect me too much.
Although I did remove the passenger side seat and the airbag light has come on and despite my own odb sensors ability to clear fault codes it can't clear this. Any help would be appreciated!

I had a Leon and then a Toledo that I liked but the niggles with the water leaks did get rather annoying... moisture in the cabin = misty windows all the time which is incredibly irritating.
They are not sports cars but I felt the MK1 Leon drove better than the MK4 Golf and didn't include the VW image tax in the purchase price... I mean good luck finding any fast-ish Golf in reasonable condition for this kind of money.

That is actually all that puts me off it. A lot of VAG products of this era had a real issue keeping rainwater on the outside.

We had that in our '02 Passat, water leaks into cabin when the drain holes below the battery box block up. Plays havoc with the 'comfort' ECU under the passenger carpet. I was lucky to find a salvage ECU so didn't have to pay over £500 for a new one, took weeks to dry out the carpets. Golf Mk 4 also had sopping carpets in rear cabin, holes had to be drilled in floorpan. PS Ridiculous positioning of (huge) battery back centre of Passat diesel engine bay, nearly got a hernia trying to get that out.
Amazing memories of my '03 1.6 Leon... It was a very cold december and I'd parked my car on a hill nose facing downwards, car leaked in copious amounts of water overnight, which then froze. Couldn't open any of the doors, all the locks had frozen shut, managed to get in through the boot after a time, crawl over the seats to be faced with... a totally frozen footwell, with all three pedals stuck frozen. I was somewhat late for work that day, the poor bloke I was carsharing with was stood in the snow for an hour
Still have fond memories of my X-plate Black Magic Cupra that I bought in 2003 - great car!
It replaced a W202 C280 Sport, but felt so much quicker (and with the optional leather seats and driver's memory was better equipped)!
Shame the handling involved so much understeer and scrabbling of the inside front wheel out of slower corners!

Then in 2005 along came business miles and a car allowance, so I discovered BMW! Back to RWD (result!) and cam-chains (even better!) but as a shed a Cupra looks pretty tempting, especially in that colour!

I have a 'ginger' 2001 Leon cupra. 150,000 miles with full service history which includes changing the entire loom!! Lovely car for commuting the M20 day to day.....tried to sell it when my commute doubled but did not have a sniff, well unless you include offers of £50....so in the end I've given it go the Mrs who loves it. Cold air induction kit and stage one remap makes it approx 210bhp and certainly quick enough for the chassis.
