I have always been a resolute supporter of the Remembrance Day parades in November, and always attend my local service at the Cathedral. I have no familial military history, nor affiliation with the forces - however I am grateful to live in a free country, provided by the sacrifice of others. Hence, I think it important to spend just a few hours out of my life to remember.

Bit poignant, sorry - but anyway, onto the point of the thread.

I have recently purchased a couple of Poppy pin badges from the Royal British Legion. These badges are made from melted-down British artillery shell fuses, which are still being churned and dug up in the fields around the Somme, some 100 years later.

They come in a lovely presentation box, and rather beautifully, each box features a certificate with the name and service number of a British soldier, who fell there 100 years ago. I have spent a quite tearful few hours on the internet, looking up the history of my soldier, and have found his family tree and history. To read the names of his parents and where he was from really does make it all quite real again, even 100 years later. I am humbled and grateful for his sacrifice, and I have been thinking of both him and his family.

I wondered if anyone else has bought one of these - if not, then I might suggest having a look. They do them in batches so you may have to wait awhile for one after ordering, but I challenge you to buy anything that will make you stop and think more than getting one of these.

I hadn't seen them, look interesting.

I've got X4276 Spitfire cufflinks - worth a look if you can still get 'em.

It's my friends first wedding anniversary on Monday, his wife is a history teacher so she will love that.

Me too also. Missed the first batch but got the second batch. Not got around to looking up the person on my card yet.

We bought 2 from the first batch. Absolutely love them, they mean so much.

Part of me wants to wear it every day, but my head reasons that it would be so special then

Bought. Many thanks. Now I look at it, I'm sure I've seen this on Facebook but somehow it never really registered.

Just tried to order one of these but the website seems to be playing up when it comes to the payment page. What a wonderful and thought provoking piece.

I'm really impressed with how they use their online shop to try to recreate the waiting, the misery and ultimately the total futility of an attempt to make a purchase. biggrin

My family got a couple of these pins this year to go with our Tower of London Poppy.

Very nice words OP, and keep it up the rest of you.

I`m a Poppy Appeal Organiser so all this is near to my heart.I will also be very busy during the next month.
When you see our volunteers standing on street corners or in shopping centers please be as generous as you can.

I missed the first batch but bought one recently.

They come with a card commemorating one of the fallen soldiers, and if you drop them a note they can also provide you with one for a specific person, in this case my great grandfather's brother, who was killed near Thiepval.

I confess I was in two minds about that, as I didn't want the other person to be forgotten either, but it's nice to have something that can be personalised. It will go with the bronze medallion and ribbons we have for him.

I also received mine, and had a look into some of the history surrounding the soldier who mine commemorates.
