I said that with 15 grand off it must be like 20 grand or not much more, he said it was a lovely black 5 door at VW Manchester for £23,500, but there is nothing even close to that, low milers are like 27k, new ones 35.

So, I guess they may negotiate but cant see them doing a brand new one for £23,500.
Even at £23,500 with £15k off that's a £38,500 car, that would have had every single option ticked. Absolute bks.

At £23,500, even in basic form it would be the best pound for pound car money can buy, IMO.
Tuvra nails it yes
Yeah, thought it sounded too good to be true, Golf was for his missus apparently.

There's a few GTI's hovering around £14k now. Is the GTD selling at a premium to the GTI, used?

The R's in a different league.

Anyone with a serious desire for one won't be considering Diesel Golf as an alternative.

I don't quite see how a Golf R would look more council than a GTI. And what does it matter what others may think (which they don't) ?

ragged to death during lease, clocked when it goes back to the dealer before the first MOT, given a quick shine and sold on as a lower miles, well kept example for more
Do you not think people who own their cars might do the same?

Surely most of those CAT D's are stolen recovered, with damage hence CAT D?

Most folk wouldn't really know the difference, R, GTI, GTE, GTD or any other, its just a Golf, not sure why an R is more "Council" than a GTI, its a very similar car, or is it the cheap-ish lease deals that have done that ?

I will just get the faster, more capable version with 4WD.

Only thing more council than an R is a GTD...it's what people get when they can't afford to buy/run/lease/rent an R

Decent spec/mileage 5 door DSG R's have dipped well below 20k now in the trade, closer to around 18k. The sheer number of them on the roads is finally starting to take effect on values, and the values will take even more of a hammering this year with the facelift release and the 14/64 reg 36 month leases coming to an end. You'd have to be crazy to buy one right now. In 10-12 months hopefully a different story.

Hmmm, had my R Estate for exactly 28 days. Then some nice gentlemen came round to the house at 2.15pm on Thursday afternoon in October, ripped the back patio door out with crow bars, turned the house upside down looking for the keys and took it for a nice shopping spree in Liverpool. They did three post offices and discharged firearms at two of them. The car was somehow recovered by the police from a hotel car park 48 hours later on false plates. My New Best Mate DC Dave in the Serious Crime Squad then impounded it for two weeks while a temporary key was obtained from the factory (can't submit the evidence if we break in) and then went over every micron of the car for another week as it was the only piece of evidence in two attempted murder cases. As he later said to me "These are the perfect car for armed robberies - nice heated seat for the driver, plenty of room for three more crims, massive boot for sorn off's and cash bags and unless the 'copter is already in the air and in the area, we don't stand a chance of keeping up."

The crime squad officer who came to the house to dust everything said he'd done 13 similar that week - all Golf R's and S3's apart from one M3 in South Manchester.

There's only two good things about this situation in that we were all out of the house and over 100 miles away when it happened and the police have contacted VWFS to advise them that we shouldn't have the car back due to the nature of what it's been used for.

Kids having nightmares. Wife scared to be left alone in the house. Utter nightmare.

Horrible situation & always have something like this in the back of my mind when thinking of a change, the slightly good thing being that it is only stuff that's been directly involved, rather than people, even if they're currently a bit traumatized.

Having said that, insurance wise it was when I checked 2-3 months ago still cheaper to have the Golf than equivalents (even in the next to rofl postcode that I currently have), probably best to go for a 3dr if you want one (and shed for room) & IMHO I'm not sure I'd listen too much to Dave.

For me the GTI wheels look more "Halfords" and the red trim make it stand out more than an R. I purposely keep my exhausts covered in grime, you barely notice that it has 4 outlets and I find it looks far more subtle than the GTI. Maybe its just me though boxedin

For me, the subtlety/boringness of the R is one of its major plus points, a proper wolf in sheep clothing. Perfect for destroying the 320D brigade hehe

that does concern me but on our road there are Focus ST, Fiesta ST, brand new Audi Q7, M4, 650i, 235i, M Class, Evoque and various other decent cars, not sure if the R is more of an issue but wouldnt want to attract too much attention, to be honest I would rather it didnt look like an R anyway, but am guessing other than removing badges that would be quite hard.

GTI gives good economy on a run and isn't a diesel. Easy.

That's one of the best comments I've seen in a while, you don't want a Golf R because it's "council" but your ideal Golf is a white TDI laugh

Any car is a 'licence loser' if you drive it like a knob!

Take the point about it attracting 'types' too & the cheap leases didn't help.

My take is that there has always been this issue since, well, forever. From Terry Thomas characters in E Types to Driving Gods in Porsches, wannabe yuppies in Cosworths, Evo's or Impreza's, it's a sort of right of passage.

For myself I have a daily that I need for work, large diesel estate, & have a Wafter for weekends. I also get to use nice stuff at work too but now that I want something quick accomplished & smaller than my daily for weekend & fun use the 'R' seems to be in a class of its own.

Don't want a BMW of any sort ever, a C63 is too hardcore & I don't need a GTD for the mileage I'd cover, a penis extension or to go back to kids card games. A GTi just isn't as accomplished & whilst I guess it would probably be at least 90% of an 'R' in most instances, the time it's not is the time that would stay with me!!

they might be cheap off lease but at the given mileages what bills are around the corner with these cars?
and those fitted with DCC -how much is one damper if its shot?
i'd also dread to pick one up where the DSG box has been raped. how much are them to replace out of warranty......
buyer beware......these arent Ford Mondeo's.
