Well, I made the choice, and GT arrived last week.
Low key colour (blade sliver), Standard exhaust, no exterior carbon, will use most days.

Amazing difference in personality when you turn the dial from normal to track. (Although I doubt mine will go on one, despite visiting Silverstone paddock in photo below)

Compared to competitors, it really is more of a GT. I have the GT pack, and the sound system is really good, and with the quieter exhaust it can be appreciated. One of the best I've heard.

Seats are comfortable and access is easy with lower sills. The slightly slower steering, noise quietening tyres, and softer springs make it much more relaxing to drive on long journeys than similar cars. I did 6hrs straight last week with no issues.

It's a mistake to think the GT is a softer S (like Evo did). It's for a different purpose and you (PH...) should buy the one which suits the intended use. If you see the de-tuning as a compromise, and you want to be on track or using it mainly for adrenaline blasts then go for the S. If you want a road car with theatre and comfort, go for the GT. (Although, as said, the GT is certainly not lacking in excitement when in track mode).

I agree that engine sound is still not the best, but that's another good reason to go for the quieter version, IMO. I drove an early 12C and it gave me a headache!

Mine is currently with the Heathrow valet parking team - hope they're not appreciating it too much...

Lovely looking car Sir...enjoy smile

£1,840 on a sound system for a "sports car"? Heaven help us, what have we become?

This used to be the case, but now McLaren Pure events will do the checks on the day for all owners.

In terms of track days outside of Mclaren control you are restricted to dealers unfortunately...

I don't really get why people track their road cars, when for the same price you could buy a fully fledged GT3 car (12C/650/458/488/etc) for the same price or cheaper!

Ceramics are not cheap to replace and the 570 is not a track car...
Because you dont have to buy two cars. And because for most people its still fast enough and exciting enough. And because you dont own a trailer. Or a tow car. Because a race car is more expensive to run. Because most people wouldnt be able to drive a GT3 car nearly well enough for it to work properly (tyre temp etc). Because you have to have somewhere to put it. And most people will need someone to run it for them.

The list really is endless.

Wait a minute, what kind of verdict is that? Was a complete waste of time reading the article.

There needs to be more differentation. The GT3 and Turbo may post similar lap times but they go about it in very different ways, and look clearly different too.
Edit: I see I misread your last sentence. I'm referring to the McLarens, not the P cars.

Look clearly different? I feel like it's one of the comparison puzzles where you have to look very hard to find any differences.

One of them has more black on that side dent and...

They are basically twins with one a little heavier.

So you haven't noticed the GT has a glass hatch and the engine is completely enclosed, giving the car additional storage space where the S has neither...?

Lucky Dan did not write this!

Good to see the real benefits of many of the endless configs of the 911 laid bear, occasional four seats and the button and gizmo count.

So McLaren it is then by a country mile.

It will be interesting to see where they go next, if they do. Longer tub for four doors or smaller tub to show Porsche how to build a proper 2 seat sports car.

Hopefully their colleagues over at F1 will finally push Honda into a decent engine and the podiums will return as well thus fusing their motorsport and road car credentials properly.

If you're going to spend £150k on a car these are surely the ones to buy. IMO they rank about as high up the automotive ladder as it's worth bothering to go.

I'm loving all these variations from McLaren.
However
Give us something different as there is a danger of becoming a bit Aston Martin I.e. Only an anorak can tell the diff between models.
Give us a real world affordable model. V8 N/A around 450hp and sub £70k

All good though from Mc

I'd like to see McLaren make a straight four, 140mph sportscar. Something in the base model Boxster/top end Elise range.

I'm not keen on track days, and this generation of supercars is just too fast for the road. So much engineering for the top end that I simply never need.

If you want a £70k V8 sportscar buy a Corvette Stingray.
If you want a £70k mid-engined N/A multi-cylinder buy a Porsche 981.

I really don't think we're ever going to see the £70k mid-engine V8 that PHers dream about. Even if we did, people would probably come up with some excuse not to buy it.

That looks lovely! I actually saw my first 570GT in the flesh, parked up in Aspley Guise last weekend - looks WAY better than the pics. Made my turbo look decidedly bland!

Def next on the list - just not sure if 570GT or 650S.

£1840 will buy you a pretty good sound system to listen to music without distractions and constant background noise AT HOME

I kind of agree; guess all the manufacturers are at it these days. However, it does make 540/570 a bit of a bargain compared with 650!
