£1,840 on a sound system for a "sports car"? Heaven help us, what have we become?
People who like good music in their car? yes
£1840 will buy you a pretty good sound system to listen to music without distractions and constant background noise AT HOME
What's your point? My old man has a new shape BMW M6 and the stereo in that was quite a bit more expensive than this one, but the sound quality is utterly immense! Worth it!

I kind of agree; guess all the manufacturers are at it these days. However, it does make 540/570 a bit of a bargain compared with 650!
Not compared with a nearly new 650S spider at circa £180k which has already depreciated from say £250k list for say a year and 5,000 miles.

Then what you get is a proper supercar with active aero, brake steer, hydraulic suspension and polycarbonate panels as well as more power and torque.
650s spider is massively underrated and massively underpriced IMHO. todays used prices will only go up in the future when with its small production numbers circa 200 in UK it will become a classic long term

The point is that HiFi music is best enjoyed at home a moving car is a dreadful place to try and enjoy music - it is ok for listening to music / news / etc., so why bother spending a silly amount of money ....

Well duh. Your point is weird though. If you want to listen to music on the go in your baby supercar what's wrong with spending a bit of extra money to listen to it as well as possible? Why are you choosing this hill to die on?

This stuff always makes me laugh. You often hear people say "Why would you want a radio when you can listen to that wonderful exhaust tone?"
Well yeah, great, until you're doing 4 hours a day on a European road trip when the "wonderful exhaust tone" quickly becomes a mind numbingly boring drone.

I always spec the best sound system available in my cars regardless of cost because having all the audio options means a much more enjoyable drive.

I think you are missing the point twice here.
1) Was explained above - car audio is car audio, the audio you have with you in your car. Moreover in these hasty times you may not have the luxury of enough time for enjoying your home audio.
2) You underestimate the engineers. Compared to your room, car interior is controlled environment of known dimensions and acoustic attributes. Engineers can do miracles with that.

What a crap, disappointing article. Why the need for the contrived Porsche comparison? I want to read about two McLarens and not the vagaries of the 911 model range. It would have been much better if you'd have actually given a detailed account of the different experience provided by the two cars. For example, we know about detail changes in steering and suspension between S and GT but how does that translate to the on-road experience? What about comparative steering feel or on-limit behaviour?

Such a wasted opportunity. Stop shoe-horning a sodding Porsche into every article and discuss cars on their own merits.

Spend time in a car why not have a hifi comparable to what you have at home? And tbh circa £2k in car when a decent home setup can cost upwards of ten times that I actually makes the value pretty good.

Modern DSPs and the fixed acoustics of a car interior actually allow for superb audio. The top Burmester setup in a Panamera is the best I've ever heard in-car. Mind you the Bose in my 911 is utter **** - can't believe people rate it in any way.

Horses for Courses etc. My favorite cars for long day trips to long tours are my DB4, Spyker C8 or XK120, none of which have a radio. For me the way to really get away from day to day life is go on a long journey without any music, concentrate on driving and not faff around with gadgetty music systems, made much worse incidentally now you can load everything you own onto it and hence be constantly messing with playlists. And buy the right NA car and with a normal exhaust and there won't be any drone. But each to his own.

I do confess to having adequate entertainment in my daily drivers, and my home audio is more than adequate too - but that's where I listen to music and don't drive.

But if nobody buys new McLarens, there will be fewer and fewer used car 'bargains' available. The 650s may well be a great car but this article is about the 570s / gt as a 'new car' purchase. Cheaper than the 650s, brand new rather than used so has a full 3 year warranty, nearly as quick as the 650s, simpler (so less to go wrong) than the 650s, and with a new 570 purchase you have free range of the options and colour selector so you can buy the car you want, rather than having a limited selection of used 650's.

Horses for courses.

Yep certainly, whatever you prefer, although I was talking about trips of a couple of weeks and thousands of miles of Autoroute.
Of course I can always just leave it switched off when I want to hear the car.

My Lambo and Ferrari were both NA, still got droney after a few hours. Each to their own etc etc.

Just because that's what you prefer, doesn't mean others don't like having a decent music set up in their car....which is why it's great to have the option to buy a high-end audio system if you want it.

Wow, you really are getting worked up over this. Is it that hard to understand why people might want a high-end sound system in their car?!
