I learnt to drive in the car my driving teacher bought for himself....Golf GTI Mk1.

Was quite entertaining as I learnt in winter and arrived for lessons on my moped,

wearing thick leather boots, learned that the gas pedal was quite sensitive.

On my Autobahn lesson the teacher just said "shift through and let it rip",

when we reached 140-ish, the car felt light and the bonnet was moving I asked "fast enough" ?

Local driving school when I was learning to drive in 2010/11 had a cooper S, my driving instructor (in a CORSA DIESEL!) always used to comment 'oh thats brave' when we saw it on the road.

I saw a Mazda 6 (recent model) with a driving instructor's name, phone address and website on the magnetic livery the other day. Seemed like a strange choice but not necessarily a bad one

Quite the opposite, they know all the kids will be queueing up to learn to drive in the VXR for the bragging rights.

One of my mates dad's did the same, had a Civic type R last time I saw him, always had a good business from it.

I learnt in a 55-plate Mini One (in 2007) which I thought was pretty cool at the time.

It seems nowadays most instructors try to use nicer cars as I'd imagine it would help a lot attracting new young customers.

There's a guy round here who has an new Audi S3 as his driving school car.

The petrol bill must be quite something I would have thought?

Impressive, especially given that a Mk1 Golf GTI tops out at about 110mph.

Given that he mentioned the 'autobahn', I've a feeling he's not talking mph...

In my area I've seen a driving instructor with a Citroen C4. Quite a strange choice given the bonnet is difficult to see in any conventional seating position. When I was learning to drive it had occurred to me it might be worthwhile to learn in the largest car possible, but I never got to test that theory.

Possibly, but 140kph isn't that impressive and potentially quite slow on most sections of the Autobahn (I live in Germany). When people do they Autobahn training here they would be expected to do the speed that the rest of the traffic and 140kph isn't unusual. I suppose the instructor could have been scared if his bonnet was moving at that speed.

Living here in Ludwigsburg, which is very close to Porsche and Mercedes, it is not unusual to see driving schools using Porsches or pretty high spec Mercedes as their cars. There is one school close to me that uses a C63. They must pay a fortune in insurance.
