I want a car for sitting around, taxed and ready to go, to be used on the occasion when everything else is out and busy.

Key for this is low purchase price, and low tax.

So, for £30 a year RFL, and about £400 max, what's the best buy.

Contenders as far as I see.
1.4 TDCI fiesta (Horrible injector leaking problems)
1.4 TDCI PSA. (Injectors as above, plus dodgy build quality)
1.5 Clio / Megane (Horrible injector failing issues)
1.2 Corsa / Astra CDTI (Oh no,must I).
1.2 Fiat. Panda would be great, but can't find one at £400

erm..... not much else.
1.4 D4D Yaris falls into the pot, but not at 400 quid.

What am I missing. Is there something out there that satisfy these requirements, is half decent to drive, and reliable? Ironically, I don't really care about fuel costs (will be minor anyway), and I'm happy to do a bit of work.....What's the PH collective suggest.

The answer from your list is simple & that is the best example you can find as only test drives & checking them over will give you the answer smile

400 quid is very tight, most cars will need work.

The answer is to just buy the best car you can find, irrespective of make and model. I wouldn't get hung up on tax, to be honest - one small repair could easily wipe out any savings over a higher-band alternative.

Another Fiat, perhaps - a Punto?

Still trying to find something half decent.

Missed a 2006 clio with EGR issues off gumtree for £100.
Also missed a 2005 206 for £220.

But still looking.

I know the absolute economics doesn't add up, but it's a bit of a laugh trying to find something so cheap, with virtually no tax, and something that will run well. That's why it's a challenging 'what car thread'

how about a classic? ta free, classic insurance, so saving there as well.
If mileage is low, then mpg matters less.

Then also the car will appreciate in value rather than depreciate, therefore if you guess at that appreciation over two years, add that to your budget smile

You might find something in here if you look long enough smile
