I don't think Tomalin writes for Evo anymore though, or John Barker, and Meaden is probably the last to have had a connection back to Performance Car days. More's the pity IMO

Some of the problem is common to nearly all car mags - the apparent need to test every successive iteration of (typically ) German performance cars. Granted, they make the most , and very possibly the best , but I really , really cannot bring myself to read 250 words of superfical appraisal of yet another S4/5 etc , AMG niche model and the yawningly extensive list of M2/3/4s subtypes . Who cares ?

Cancelled my subscription yesterday. Issues 230 will be my last one.

I'm enjoying the Readly app for now which has Car, Top Gear, Autocar, Classic & Sports Car, F1 Racing and even What Car amongst others.

Along with all the online content, this gives me my car fix, and I don't think I'll miss Evo much now.

I bought ECOTY last week and aside from the sheer predictability of the result, what made me realise how the mag has changed was the fact that only two cars below £45K made the final, the Focus and VW Golf. A far change from the early days when all but one or two of the cars would be real world priced. 1999 was my favourite, 306 Rallye and Impreza RB5 mixing it with the 911, which of course won.

In fact the whole motoring press has become a total bore, just constantly worshipping german cars.

Latest issues just dropped through the door (a decent return to form now I've cancelled my subscription) and I note all the leavers, Trott included, are still listed as contributing writers. Are they using up old copy or are these people going to keep popping back in?

Yep, I thought that too! I've bought two issues on the bounce now and next months Renaultsport special looks interesting. When its good, EVO is still the best, its just that in recent years the good issues have been less common than they used to. All the car mags concentrate far too much on German machinery, but I guess its linked to the huge sales of BMW, Audi and Merc these days.

It's the Renaultsport issue I was referring to. Subs copy came through today so should be in the shops just after Christmas. Renaulsport article did catch my eye, as did one with an F355 in the Cairngorms.

IMO, the downturn started when Trott took over,
Could be coincidence, might not....

I'd like to think this is how it's gone but suspect most of this content was in the bag while Trotts seat was still warm, great coincidence though, if the next couple of issues continue in this way I could take out a new subscription.

I can't say I'm going to miss him from evo. My biggest concern is that he's off to Motor Sport magazine.

If he fks that up, he can be sure that the rather vocal and curmudgeonly readership will let him know. It's an institution and doesn't need to be meddled with.

Came here to post I got my fresh copy today and how refreshing it was-definitely a big focus on more attainable cars, and all the better for it.

There was some Catchpole written content in there (which was great-shame this will probably be the last!) too I noticed, so the comment about it being on the cooker for a while is probably right.

I'd completely agree with the price aspect of ECOTY, and the lack of the 'reasonably priced' COTY that they used to have.

I mean-I don't want to sound too much me,me, me but I'm 26, in a well paying job and interested in cars. Of the ECOTY cars, I reckon that within the next 5 years only the Focus and Golf (maybe the BM) are cars that I could even consider buying, even used!

It just makes it feel really detached from the 'real world', and the writing doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be. Ironically the same month I bought a CAR magazine-and their "Reds" feature was much more engaging than ECOTY was. The best bit of the ECOTY issue also involved the cheapest car-the C1 racing. I wanted that story to be so much longer!

To be fair, there is far more choice now for performance cars on the whole and with it far more very expensive ones. It's not like they held back with the offerings of the time. In the 1999 ECOTY you've still got the latest Ferrari, Porsche and Bentley. Throw in a GTR, an M5 and a Lotus too and that's still a hell of a lot of value.

Granted there was an 80bhp Punto in there along with a regular Audi A6 but they're not cars that would get a sniff now because there's so many performance variants.

What is there at the cheaper end of the spectrum that could have been worth adding to the final this year? They had the 208 GTi last year but can't think of any acclaimed small hot hatches this year?
