I used to get to my local newsagent and wait for the delivery van so I could get the trader as early as possible. The local cafe had a payphone so you could browse with a mug of coffee and get an early call in.
Happy days!
Didn't dealers used to bung AT so they'd get it the day before the public saw it?Happy days!
I had a massive car magazine clear out a few years ago but kept a few of the very first Auto Traders .. will have to dig them out !
And now Auto Trader is all on line with nothing left in print. Used to love spending a couple of hours looking through !
Stuff like the 3 door Cosworths were never really cheap though .. they were still a lot of money in the early 90's when an average UK house could be bought for £50k - £60k.

As a teenager I used to buy a copy of the Southern Edition of Autotrader and study each car and its relative price. There was one full page advertiser that stood out with his wit and corny lines although I can't remember the name of the dealer. Then I discovered the Northern Edition which was positively a telephone directory - I used to think everyone oop North was a dealer.
He used to advertise along the lines of : "beautiful black seductress, waiting for your attention "Full page ads, i think in Stockport area. The best were the salvage/damage adverts. Burnt out cars, always described as "mint pre accident/fire". Like it makes a difference!

Was that the guy who used to advertise in the monthlies too? Adverts that sort of had three rows of four boxes each with some old money exotica like a Bentley Turbo R with some readers wives-esque descriptions along the lines of "raunchy full bodied lady that likes a drink but goes wild when given a firm hand!"MDMA . said:

I was born and brought up in Reading, the local newspaper had a "cars for sale" section.A young rep`from the newspaper would call on garages selling the little squares. He thought this is a good idea,I will do this solo, and founded the Thames Valley Trader magazine. His name was John Madejski you all know the rest, the mag` later became the national Autotrader and he finally sold out to Hurst Publishing for about £175 million.
His name is all over the town now, even my old school is now called The John Madejski Academy.

3-doors never really went down much below 4,500 asking price for a decent runner - the one below was on a Q so not representativeThe 4 doors could be picked up for under 3k -10k would buy you a driveway full - you'd never get one below 2k really as they'd break for more than that, engine, box, diff, seats, wheels etc

Used to drive me crazy when they misprinted phone numbers. I spent 2 weeks driving around Kent trying to track down a white BMW 2002 and took my copy into every garage and petrol station in a 10 mile radius of the STD code. It eventually paid off though and the car itself was one I regretted selling for the past 28 years.
If only I could have bought all those £5k e30 M3's and squirrelled them away.
Here you go Mark - there's some up for less than 5k here If only I could have bought all those £5k e30 M3's and squirrelled them away.
In fact you'd probably get all 4 on the page for around 20k
Remember looking at one for 3k once but it was a bit rough
