Both used cars I've seen are the same price and both have 70,000 on the clock.

The DSG Tiguan has a new cambelt and water pump, whilst the Honda is chain-driven.

Not got time to go test drive both so wondering which to go for, reliability and running costs being the key for me.

We had a CR-V of that vintage, we discounted the Tiguan due to the smaller boot space.

We suffered from worn front driveshafts on the Honda which gave a nasty lateral vibration under acceleration.

Honda UK were great, even though the car was out of warranty they supplied the parts with us picking up the tab for labour.

Apart from that it was trouble free for the 2 years and 30,000 miles we kept it for.

Reliability and running costs are Honda's domain IMHO.
I had a Civic with the 2.2 diesel and found it excellent.

As long as the clutch is OK, the CRV will be bulletproof, larger and more comfortable.

If reliability and running costs are the preference it has to be the Crv

CRV is a little dull and lumbering. Great space inside and solid. Niggly issues with the one my wife had.
Sold it for a Tiguan. Feels tighter, stiffer and more exciting (if that can said about these type of cars) than the CRV.
I just don't think we'd reached target age group for the CRV.

I went to test drive a 2009 CR-V and it felt so oldy-worldy inside, the engine was really loud, it averaged 19mpg on the mixed route and I just wasn't keen on the experience. I really wanted to like it, but felt resistance toward it.

19mpg? That sounds very low, my XC60 D5 manages to average 30+ towing a 1.5 ton caravan....
