Hi,
My first post so go easy....
I was thinking today that there is often a very distinctive sound when starting some automatic cars. I'm talking about the torque converter type rather than automated-manual.

Its hard to describe, its a kind of metalic grinding sound. I'm pretty sure its not a problem as I've heard it on many autos over the years even some fairly new ones.

Do you know what I mean? What is the noise caused by? Or am I just dreaming????

It's the starter on the ring gear that make that distinctive noise but I don't know why - my 330d makes that sound.

A manual has a heavy thick flywheel with the ring gear that maybe deadens the sound , auto has a light plate that the torque converter bolts to with the ring gear on it , IMHO the best starter noise is the big block mopar engines fitted to the 60s/70 in the dodges and plymouths etc and the Awsome Jensen Interceptor......

Jaguar V12 has a nice starter sound, almost sounds geared.

I know what you mean, my Z4C is my first auto and I've always felt it "noisy" when its cold in a way that I couldn't explain but couldn't attribute it to just being the engine, I always had a sneeking feeling that it was something to do with the transmission.
