I really want something that is brilliant to drive - a genuine grin-inducing daily, where the commute up and down the A2 won't seem like a drive into the abyss of middle age and death. hehe
The daily commute on the motorway is always going to be a bore-fest, and you will just end up kicking yourself doing it in a lotus, itll be uncomfortable, you wont be able to use the car anywhere near its potential etc..

I vote for some big old comfy barge, stuff like a BMW 7 series with full leather/wood and ideally a carphone built into it to waft to work in all the luxury daily-banger money will buy you. Think of the barge as an extension of your bed/comfy chair, comfortably transporting you to work. And even a relatively "slow" 728 will be just fine.

If you can change your route, I could do M20 and A249 in to the office, but instead I go A251 and A2 and I do it in my barge...

The route isn't the problem! Driving in the south east is crap on many many routes!

Like the idea of a 7-series. I have a convertible XJS already and that, is most definitely, not a daily!

Mini cooper s r53? supercharge whine is addictive - relatively cheap, handle well - 210bhp in JCW form.

if you want something for pure brute force - try an evo 8 before prices get mental.

Something wafty with savage power sounds like the solution! Jag XJR, something AMG perhaps?

Monaro. New Mustang.

Sounds like it is time for you to pop your Alfa Romeo cherry.

Check out the new Giulia or the Giulietta veloce. If you can handle something a little older then try the GT or 147/156 GTA.

many thanks for the help.

But.

A Lotus Elise?

Maybe an Evora, yes, but an elise?

Any other suggestions? (scuttles off to look at evoras)
I've driven a Lotus Elise of some description, as a daily, for nearly ten years! Be it the weekly shop, the commute to work, long journeys across the country or the odd European road trip ... rain, sleet or snow! Pussy. wink

But in all seriousness, the Evora is a much more comfortable proposition. The handling is sublime and the sound from the V6 is fantastic with an aftermarket exhaust. It's what I'd get now. The Elise feels a bit more 'race car', especially the S1 ... and especially so with a Honda/Duratec/Audi engine conversion.

I've run my Elise as a daily commuter car for the last nine years (closer to ten now, I suppose) and it's been great... wouldn't be my choice for an A-road slog though.

The Evora is worth a look; I'd be tempted by something like a 993, too.
