Thanks all for your responses. None from ph advising when though :-) for those that have one, do you think I am daydreaming when I think that the 140i will get me circa 35mpg - to be clear, I am not talking about when I kick it. To the guy who has had a 125d and a 140i. I am generally getting 50mpg in the diesel. Apologies in asking a fuel economy question in relation to this car. I realise that this incenses the multi millionaires / company car drivers on here. To some self funders, it's quite an appropriate question :-)
335 miles on first tank (32.4mpg) on a tight engine including a painful return trip up the m3 to reading (50 miles taking 2 hours) so with the engine fully bedded in and a nicer run I fully expect to top 35mpg on a tank. In fact over on babybmw.net there's a guy whose just clocked up 1300 miles and he's posted a 130mile journey where he averaged 43mpg!Stop thinking and just do it you'll never miss the sound of a diseasel or the soot or the cold start racket or the lack of revs the engine can do!

Sounds achievable. From memory, I got about 43 on a motorway run (maybe high 30s allowing for an optimistic trip computer) and about 29-32 in day to day driving.
Economy is very impressive but range is quite poor due to the tiny tank size.
I have a 5 door auto.
I've done nearly 6000 miles in my 140 now. I'm averaging 30mpg. I do a mix of one week M25 runs and the next back roads with my foot down. most i've ever had from a tank is 360 and the least is around 260-270. I've only ever run it on super, it's about £60 to fill from empty. Almost always in comfort as I dont like the delayed throttle response in eco.
It's a great little car that perfectly suits what I wanted from it. I can commute in relative comfort with cheap running costs. I can also shove it in sport engine and sport gearbox and it is fun.
To those that have one, play with the gearbox. I was driving in comfort and when I wanted to drive harder i'd shove the engine in sport. About a month ago I found that if you put the gearbox in sport as well the car feels MUCH faster.
