Stolen Golf R & Touareg R

Though I agree that many people breaking into a house for keys wont be 'ex siberian special forces' lets be realistic, as other people have done here.
Do you seriously keep a 'floor lifter' by your bed? - If you do then that is a terrible way to live, isnt it?
Same with letting the dog off the lead, your going to go downstairs (assuming thats where the dog is) and wonder past the person trying to nick your car to let the dog out at him?
These are all scenarios that happen in an ideal world, in the real world you best hope the person(s) that have broken in are not nuts / can handle themselves (they are criminals, its unlikely they are harmless) and dont turn your bar on you / stab you or similar.
OK, some thieves will just run away if confronted, but I wouldnt want to take that chance unless It was an unavoidable situation, e.g. the thief comes into my room / corners me or my family.
Leave the key in a suitable place (obviously not within reach of the door to allow 'pick-pocketing' them and only confront them if you need to - Absolutely no way would I want to set about somebody just to keep hold of a fully insured hunk of metal on the drive unless the situation forced me to.
This kind of thing would make me think twice about parking certain cars visibly on the drive or letting the OH drive regularly in them, and thats a really sad way to have to think.
In my old area a woman was stabbed in a car-park in broad daylight going to the hairdressers for her S3, apparently the idea is to stab first as that completely immobilises the owner of the car (unless you are a PH hero of course!) - No need to ask for keys or risk fighting back.
Fingerprint recoginition or a key pad to 'unlock' the car like a phone would go some way to prevent all of this, even if it would make starting the car / changing drives a little more inconvenient.
I've seen the term 'floor lifter' a couple of times in this thread, and nothing on Google helps me with what it could be. What is it exactly?Do you seriously keep a 'floor lifter' by your bed? - If you do then that is a terrible way to live, isnt it?

Sorry to hear about this OP. Sounds like it ended well from a financial point, but it's the emotional/personal side of it that matters most. I've heard of a few Golf R's going missing, shared via friends on Facebook.
Mine arrives next month and for the first time in years I'm thinking about not using my driveway and parking outside on the street a few doors down.
Hi thanks however this will not end well financiallyMine arrives next month and for the first time in years I'm thinking about not using my driveway and parking outside on the street a few doors down.
To date excess on insurance x 2 = £1060
Locksmith and new door handles = £300
Replacement CCTV camera = £100
Lost deposit and admin fees on 4 month old Touareg ( didn't cover it in the Gap policy ) = £3000
New deposit on replacement vehicle = £1000 minimum
Up spec alarm system = £400
I could go on but you get the point. I am just thankful that the cars were leased as wouldn't want to be selling stolen / recovered / repaired cars in 2 years

My last lease car I didn't have deposit protection included, but I've done so for this one. Sad state of affairs really that they've started offering this. Shows how many are going missing.

Oh my. Sorry to hear that. I thought the locks etc would have been covered on the home policy and forgot about the deposits. Sorry. Just some people I know have waited forever for payouts after theft. A friend's 911 went under similar circumstances about four years ago and it was a nightmare with the payout.

Agreed, what a sad state - People sleeping with bars under beds, parking cars on the road so theives dont know where you live, selling cars / not choosing the cars they want etc. Then there is the mental and monetary cost if a car is stolen. My last lease car I didn't have deposit protection included, but I've done so for this one. Where the hell are these cars going? Surely this has gone past them being stolen to commit over crimes in / joyride now, they must be getting sold on somewhere as cars just dont break up for profit like the used to.
Had a Focus RS a few years ago and many were going missing and loads of people were using the good old fashioned Disklok on the steering wheel.
Just putting it out there as it adds another layer of hassle. May not stop the super determined though.....
Some people were even wiring in a hidden manual fuel pump cut off switch!

....insurance paid out in less than 7 days!!! (WTF?!)
....... disabled the street light!!
When my garage was burgled (it's a detached double, a fair way from the house, lots of hedges and trees) the streetlights had been disabled; they'd been like that for a week or so, so it does make me wonder........ disabled the street light!!
This happened on a Tuesday/Wednesday night; the OHs KTM insurance paid out (this was after haggling!) the following Thursday and my R1 insurance a day later. No arsing around seeing if they'd be recovered, I suspect the inscos must be able to "profile" stuff and know when they've really really gone for good.
I live in a nice area and that's the first and only time I've been a victim of crime in my 48 years - but it's made me beyond paranoid. There's no way I'd ever consider something like an M5 for example, unless I really really lived out in the middle of the back of beyond. Doesn't matter where you live - scrotes from Salford or whatever have access to cars too, and can just follow you home no matter how far away you live. That's that.

Few reports recently of Fiesta STs and mk2 Focus RS's having their diskloks cut off with battery grinders. As you said, will obviously deter opportunist thieves, but the gangs don't careJust putting it out there as it adds another layer of hassle. May not stop the super determined though.....

Police reckon they are all being stripped and sold for partsApparently £50k car = £8k in parts

Before my car went, my neighbour disturbed an attempted theft of his st, they legged it as soon as disturbed. They know there are lots to choose so why risk a confrontation.
Gang was broken up eventually, but there are always new ones ready to take over.

These gangs are really efficient at stripping vehicles. If it can come off, it will, and you're just left with half a naked shell dumped in a field with all identity strippedApparently £50k car = £8k in parts

what would that add up to?

Be interesting to know what a broken Golf R would make, someone has to sell the bits on ebay and is then traceable:

I didnt think there would be a strong market for broken up modern cars like there was in the 90's era with the parts from cosworths / early subarus fetching good money with a good market for them, there isnt the same modifying culture today but I suppose if thats what police are saying then fair enough.Engine

Must be a fairly decent operation though to be stripping enough cars to make good money - Would require premises and a way of shifting the parts and getting rid of the shells all without alerting attention. If they were doing more than a car a week (which they would need to if they are a gang and want to make enough money for it to be worthwhile) thats a lot of stuff to strip / sell / hide without being caught.
My money is on them being stuffed in a container and sent elsewhere.
