Not much use now and a little off topic... I have just installed one of these:

Half a day to install and £150 all in. It sits in the mouth of the driveway as a visual deterrent and nothing can get off the driveway when up. I sleep a little better at night.
Or...

If a car criminal wants your car, they will take it. However that only applies if you brush all car criminals with the same determination/motive brush. In reality the post may actually deter some of the more average gangs who don't want confrontation, but an organised violent gang will take it regardless, so this security post just increases the propensity for them to break in and get violent with you for the post keys. It would be safer to keep these gangs out of your house by not having a post.

Sadly it's a lose lose situation.
It wont stop someone who deactivates CCTV and silently drills locks, nor those who go for the violence approach, might make a few scumbag 3.14er's or crackhead opportunists look for easier pickings but might make them think you have something worth further investigation.

You could have an immobiliser that'd let you get half a mile then conk out but then they might fubar/torch out of spite. Or come back next week. Dunno what the solution is, besides that quaint old fashioned idea of actually locking up the scumbags.

That's not how it typically works. From the MO this is organised crime. They know the police and forensics will have been around, advised on security precautions and locks beefed up accordingly. These guys want in and out, they don't want to be caught and linked to 50 other thefts. They rarely come back in these cases - it's on to the next house.

It has happened to a few people near me. They even left wallets, handbags, mac books etc that were next to the keys - just wanted the car
Exactly. They could have taken phones, laptops, etc but they were just after the cars. We did hear them thanks to yappy dog however they drove off as we got up. Police had the Golf within 30 minutes of it being taken.

Been in the house 18 years always had nice cars and this is the first incident of any note. Police did say it is likely to be a local gang based on where they retrieved the Golf and they are doing up to 30 cars a month.

Utterly pointless I'm afraid...

"Give us the key to the post, or we'll smash your fking head in."

I'd rather the ne'er-do-wells just take the car and kill themselves with it.

No use to me unfortunately as cars are parked outside the house on a lane

I love how everyone is a security and criminial pyschologist!

It's up to you, ultimately. Advice given to me by Police was make it look tougher to get into your house than your neighbours.

My neighbour drives a beaten-up 14 year old Toyota Rav4, so that makes no sense.

Yeah.

I get the whole idea of not making it trivial to steal the car (e.g. coat hanger through the letterbox kinda thing), but a gang that is a) not deterred by CCTV, security lights, etc and b) is willing to remove it rather than go somewhere else - is a gang that has planned to strike your property specifically.

They're not your typical opportunists going up and down the street testing door handles, they're people who have singled your property out and made a plan to attack it. I wouldn't want to confront people like this, personally, for the sake of a car.

This too was the advice I was given. At a certain point if they aren't disincentivised by that then they aren't the sort of people you would want to bump into in the dark.

Was anybody arrested in the golf? Please say they were.

Was there any damage to it? Please say there wasn't.
Nobody arrested they fled into a house but chopper didnt get exact address, both front alloys and tyres gone, may need repair to inside of front wing where tyre has hit it.

They drove for a couple of miles after tyres went so could be further unseen damage

Jesus, sorry to hear that. Hopefully the Touareg gets a better result and less/no damage.

Main thing is you are ok.

Would a 50k motor not have a tracker fitted? If not, might be on its way to Eastern Europe by now. Normally stolen to orderfrown
unfortunately it's really not at all difficult to jam a tracker and make it useless
Maybe 10 years ago. Technology has moved on a lot from then.

Luckily I don't believe I have any particularly "desirable"/stolen to order cars so hopefully the post just makes them look at my neighbour with the nice new BMW and no post.

As said earlier and echoed by my dad once, the harder it is or looks the less likely it is to happen, there are plenty of easy targets.

Most of the car theft stories I know are people with coat hangers through letterboxes of doors (using to open the door or fishing for the keys). It's one of the reasons my new door has no letter box.

Genuinely though, I take your point and honestly if they are prepared to do all of that to get in I will find the keys, help them load the car and lower the post myself. I am glad it didn't come to that with the OP though they found the keys and went on their way. Things are replaceable.

This sort of thing really does worry me.

Thankfully our house was owned by a copper and is pretty secure with deadlocks and extra security on all doors and gates.

My main issue is half the time I haven't a clue where my own car key is let alone someone asking me where they are under duress. I do tend to just plonk them down in different spots around the house (I don't use the cars that much).

My second worry is our cats are house cats and we would probably spend a week looking for the little buggers.

After all that, I do hope your other car is returned unharmed.

Nothing a couple of tins of drugged dogfood can't sort. That's what happened to my friend's 3 Alsatians when thieves broke into into farmhouse to steal the keys to his 2 Defenders.

Serious question (and I like Defenders) but who the hell are they being stolen for? They aren't fast or glamorous really, are they going overseas?

Have you seen what Defender values have done lately?

They're being nicked hand-over-fist. Stripped for parts, mostly, with quite a few being rung with legit IDs (often from tax-free Series).

Ahhh, stripped for parts make sense, I was just struggling to imagine Eastern European criminal types getting excited over a Defender as opposed to a blinged X5 etc.
