It looks interesting but how much will people really pay for a small hyundai hatchback. At least initially it will depreciate like a brick too. Having said that I hope it makes production.
Not if its a limited mid engine rwd special it won't but lets see. It will be an interesting failure.

I am interested too, possibly.
However, 300bhp and Turbo charged, is it not a bit weak starting off? Surely if it offers less practicality than all its rivals, surely it should give them a bloody nose in outright performance? I think it has to be 350bhp as an absolute minimum, personally. Seems a bit half arsed considering you can have a 335bhp practical, RWD, Turbo BMW for less (probably).
Unless they go down the 300bhp stripped out (R26R) route of course, then it does get interesting.....

If the number in the article is right it's more than a quarter of a tonne lighter than the 1-series.
I don't think cars like this sell on the grounds of conventional logic though. No-one bought the V6 Clio due to its spec sheet. Obviously there will be some crossover, but I can't see very many people who are interested in this having any interest in a mainstream German hatchback or vice versa.

Will it be as powerful as an RS3, as sharp to drive as a Type R/new Megane, as good value as a Golf R etc. The Clio had THAT engine and a history, this is a 2.0 Turbo with no real history or heritage, on paper its nothing special. IMO, it has to be very special to leave a mark in this segment. Fingers crossed it is, I just don't think they are aiming high enough.
Then again, it could be the powerful GT86 that I have always fancied

The fact it has the correct driven wheels, I think puts it in a great starting position personally. Yeah there are M135/140i's.. but they boring as st really. Assumed the 'Limited' comment I made would get the point across.

Possibly, but you sacrifice a lot of practicality, plus I wouldn't mind betting that it won't be far off the price of an M2 if it gets launched.Tuvra said:

Hyundai are keen to establish themselves as a performance brand, it makes more economic sense to build a few examples of a mad looking racer and run the series ahead of BTCC or something, than it does to engineer a complete production car with an unusual bespoke chassis that will let's be honest sell bugger all...

Was just watching WRC and was thinking wouldn't it be great if someone made one of these.... looks like someone is going to!
I was just thinking about this. Hyundai must spend fortunes to achieve the success they have in WRC recently. However, they could really do with a car that could capitalise on a growing racing pedigree, and increase their brand presence across the board. If they were to launch this as a road car it possibly wouldn't be a huge revenue spinner, and probably would lose money. But what it would gain in terms of brand recognition could be quite startling. And let's face it, Hyundai are far from short of money to invest in these sorts of ventures. (and we do also have a Hyundai...)

I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to moan that it didn't have enough power.
Power isn't everything. If they manage to produce it with the low weight they claim (same as GT86) 300bhp will be more than enough.
German cars in particular are now very powerful because they are so bloody heavy. Give me a lower powered lighter car any day. Just ask Gordon Murray.
