I disagree.

Generally I find most VW owners are not bad people, but they are very cliquey and unless you fit into their clique they will look down on you.

The amount of people I see in Mk1 and Mk2 golf's who don't even acknowledge a nod or wave because "it's classikh car brooo" is laughable. The type of people whom you KNOW have seen you but they want to act cool and pretend they haven't.

Not to say all are like that, I have found some of my closest friends through VW's and VAG shows but I feel the cars are what brought us together rather than what keep us together. I've been in the VAG scene for about 7 years now... I know it fairly well. The decline in the last 4 or 5 years is quite sad.

The problem is a lot of people don't like being told "you're wrong" whether it's justified or not so when you see something as a clued up member of an enthusiast group (of any type of car or activity) you come across as a cock when you point out that someone is being stupid/dangerous and as such get branded as a tw@ and that then gets branded as being unfriendly!

I am on a group on FB called TFSI tuning that is pretty friendly to be fair.
Been into the VAG stuff for about 9 years myself and I know exactly what your saying. In about 2011 I went to Edition 38 for the first and last time, not a bad weekend but it opened my eyes to amount of dicks that are into the VAG scene now.

I'm still into my VW's but stick to the air-cooled stuff, I'm yet to meet a nob head who owns a splitty!

Always found that anything to do with the RenaultSport Megane/Twingos to be a fairly decent bunch. I always suspected that due to anything French considered a bit of an underdog attracted a fairly open minded type of person. So there seemed to be an acceptance of other marques and appreciation for other cars without the 'my car is best' mentality.

I owned a VW for a short time and I got the impression from forums (and from friends who are VAG fans) that there is definitely a mentality that anything VAG is superior to other marques. I'm not saying that's definitive of VAG owners by any means but there's definitely a snobbery there which I'm not convinced is justified. That said, there used to be a similar mentality from Jap car owners that I've had experience of. Anything that wasn't Japanese was immediately considered inferior. The irony being that I'd heard that snobbery from owners of 15+ year old Japanese cars who were still adamant everything else was crap.

Absolutely awesome bunch
Agreed. Friendly online and in person - had members offer to work on my 155 for beer tokens only as they just love their cars.

FCCUK.org (Fiat Coupe Club) very good too. Also Lotus 7 club (Blatchat etc) is friendly and there's a wealth of knowledge. Only meets I went to in either of the 7s I owned were club-organised trackdays, but they were very friendly (and some good and quick drivers too).

Are you on the group?

I don't own a TFSI anymore and certainly wouldn't consider myself in the clique.

I am pretty good mates with a some key people but most of the time i just rip into other people for fun laugh

As long as it's reasonably fair you can say pretty much what you like without issue!

I always found Celica Club to be extremely friendly a few years ago, really helpful group of people.

Civic Type R owners always seemed full of trolls, can't speak for the other Type R forums.

SXOC and S15 owners were both also really helpful, but unfortunately they're getting quieter because of Facebook groups.

In my experience the more specific on make / model you get then the worse the community tends to be, particular nods to Focus STOC and mk5GTI . These tend to be cliquey and function as massive echo chambers for a select few to receive validation on their latest modification of questionable taste. Also seems that might is right and to be taken seriously you have to spend well into 5 figures modifying your car. Any minor criticism of the model is not allowed.

However, broader churches tend to be much better represented. Met some great people through PH (just avoid the mouth breathers on the forum) and the none specific Japanese owner cubs.

Stand out for me though was the MLR/Lancer Register

Also, avoid Facebook groups! Great for used part bargains but tend to be populated by the council end of the ownership spectrum who considering paying £10-£50 per year robbery.

Used to do ed38 but just full of exactly the people you describe

As for the VAG scene the problem in recent years is in my opinion you get people who ask the same questions all the time, it's not new search for it and some people get annoyed with that. The other factor is the price of mk4/5 golf's is now low enough for many people to have and it attracts all varieties of people, and as stated some want to have the most amazing car for about £50 and want to do things not recommend e.g. BOV rather than recirc valve and won't listen to the people who are trying to help. I'm not on TFSI tuning page but i've heard its a good group(i own a 1.9 TDI Leon hence not on there), but I am part of a group VAG Tuning and we are more about tuning and performance than the scene and try to help people out i think we are a friendly bunch

I would maybe say it can be a little clickly and yes there are people who think VAG is the greatest brand ever(i am not one), but again I have made some of my closest friends from this scene so i find it good but i think the question is very subjective myself with too many variables for a definitive answer

MG Good/okay, depending on the forum.

MX5 Is 99% good, but I'm still on a couple pages on facebook and some stuff gets really quite daft...

SXOC (200SX) is fantastic, really good folk, traders etc and have made some really good friends from it.

IIRC aren't you the guy that got into a massive spat on here with a chassis engineer at Mclaren after he called out your shonky chassis notch?

Cliosport.net seem like a friendly bunch.

Civinfo is one to avoid, full of fanboy ricers who believe any sort of negative criticism of the fn2 type r or any other Honda for that matter is trolling, they like to brag about racing on the road and fit bgw's on their shopping trolleys.

I am but, I'm more of a lurker than a poster. I like all the tech stuff and the turbo kits our European chums pedal out on there. AKS Alex and Niki being on there too provide great info. I'm just not a fan of all the hard cut rev limit and exhaust flames / bangs and stuff, which is popular on there.

And if any remapper suggestions other than R Tech come up, it all gets a bit bhy smile But Niki himself is humble enough to recommend other tuners!

Is that to make clearance for the driveshafts when lowering the car? Is it really that bad for structural integrity? I wouldn't do it to my own Golf but it never struck me as being that drastic, but then I'm not a McLaren chassis engineer smile

It's a bad idea. I think that pretty much covers it. Flippin' daft.
